The email, which stems from a gmail account, is not from Rotary.

On Tuesday our club received a visit from our District Governor, Laura Morie. She spoke to us about the roles of rotarians in society today, and how those roles are changing. She spoke of how the numbers of people living in abject poverty world wide are dropping, but there is still a lot of room for rotarians to give a hand up to others. She also spoke of how volunteering is the ultimate from of democracy where we get to vote every day on what type of community we want to have.
She encouraged us to think about what types of volunteer activities we take part in that would be a good fit for Rotary. She spoke of how the membership in our adult rotary clubs has been stagnant for many years now but the membership of Interact and Rotaract clubs has risen substantially. The number of these clubs now exceeds the number of Rotary clubs in our district. She encouraged us to continue to promote and sponsor these clubs for younger members as they are our base for future members. She also noted that rotary has done a lot of work in the last few years to remove some barriers to membership and hopefully this will help us to build our clubs in the future.
Rotary is known as one of the best charitable organisations around, in that over ninety eight percent of funds donated, actually reach the people in need. Our premiere project, polio eradication, is nearing its goal of eliminating wild polio, which will most likely be reached within the next year. When this occurs, we will be leaving behind a legacy of health, hygiene and infectious disease tracking that will carry on for many years to come.

Annual Christmas meal for St. Teresa of Calcutta School.
The annual Christmas meal is prepared by an area Junior High School for the students and families of St. Teresa. This is one of the rare opportunities they have to get all families in the (economically challenged) area involved and build community around the school.
They’re looking for up to 10 members of the Edmonton Strathcona Rotary Club to come out and help to prepare and serve the food on site at the school, as well as to do some light set-up if needed (the Grade 6 classes will mostly take care of this part).

What is Champions Day?
Champion's Day is YESS' Annual Awareness Day. It was started a couple of years ago as a way to kick off our annual campaign with maximum impact and to create awareness in Edmonton and all surrounding communities about YESS and the youth that we serve. Our annual campaign raises significant funds for YESS, so untimately, the more people we can reach with info about YESS, the more kids we'll be able to help.

On Tuesday, Hal Quilliam reminded us all that November is Rotary Foundation month.
The Rotary Foundation is OUR foundation and is, essentially, the bank that funds Rotary's activities both local and international. Whatever charity you support, local, national or international, please consider adding The Rotary Foundation (TRF) to your list.
Hal also reminded us, that Canadian tax receipts are issued to all donors and that Canadian Tax laws provide a 50% tax credit.
You should also know that The Rotary Foundation is rated by the Charity Navigator in the top three charitable foundations in the world reflecting efficiency, accountability and transparency.
The 2016-17 membership dues are due. An electronic invoice was emailed on July 21, 2016. The due date is August 31, 2016.
You can pay online from the link in the invoice or you can always open and click the link in the My Billing Account Balance link in the My ClubRunner box on the Admin page after login.
If you wish to pay by cash or cheque, give the $225.00 made out to "Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona" to Donna Hutton at your earliest convenience.

District 5370 Police Record Check Process
The procedure applies to both Rotarians and non-Rotarians involved in any Rotary sponsored vulnerable person activity.
Have a vulnerable persons record check completed.
Submit your application with the Club’s letter of introduction (obtained by Hans Granholm) to the local police service.
After you receive the certificate, submit the original (photocopies are not accepted) (This procedure is to be updated) to the address in my signature below or alternately deliver to the District office.
Original is reviewed by Youth Protection Chair, Staff Sergeant Brian Scott.
Original and letter of certification are returned to volunteer directly. (To be updated)
Provide a photocopy to the club.
Certification lasts for a period of three years.

Certification is free of charge and sometimes they will complete the certification while you wait (if you have time to wait).
Edmonton Police Service (EPS)
EPS charges $15 for the certification and be aware that they accept cheque or money order ONLY. No cash or plastic. Cheque or money order should be made out to “City of Edmonton”.
The certificate will be mailed to you, usually within a week.
