The Rotary Foundation and UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education are offering up to 10 scholarships for graduate study at UNESCO-IHE's Delft campus in the Netherlands. The aim is to increase the number of trained professionals who can devise, plan, and implement water and sanitation solutions in developing areas. The scholarships also are designed to promote long-term relationships between Rotary members and skilled water and sanitation professionals. Scholars will receive a Master of Science degree in urban water and sanitation, water management, or water science and engineering. The...

Interact clubs are making a positive difference in schools and communities around the world. Leaders of sponsor Rotary clubs and districts should make sure their Interact clubs get the recognition they deserve by verifying that they qualify for a Presidential Citation. First, ensure that the Interact club status is active in Rotary's database by checking the Listing of Club-Sponsored Organizations report in Rotary Club Central. If a sponsored club is not listed, submit the Interact Club Certification Form by 1 March. Then, verify by 15 April that your Interact clubs have qualified for the...

Rotary members, their families and friends can support Rotary’s work by bidding on antiques, artwork, jewelry, and collectibles through eBay Live Auctions events. Each month, Rotary will promote on its social media outlets a set of upcoming Live Auctions events, and eBay, the world’s largest auction website, will donate a portion of all sale proceeds from those events to Rotary. Live Auctions events enable buyers to participate in auctions across the United States -- held at such auction houses as Sotheby’s, Swann, and Freeman’s -- without leaving home. Under this proceeds-sharing...

A new email purporting to be from Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Ray Klinginsmith is targeting Rotary members. The email falsely claims that members can become End Polio Now ambassadors if they email club information to a Gmail address within 48 hours. The fraudulent email has the subject line “BECOME AN END POLIO AMBASSADOR” and is sent from a fake email address. This is a scam. Rotary staff is working to resolve the issue. Avoid being the victim of scams by deleting any email that appears suspicious.

The Rotary Interact Club is having a great year.
Under the competent leadership of President Sophie Berube and her executive team and membership, they have provided dinner four times this school year (courtesy of our Rotary Club picking up the tab for the groceries), prepared, served, cleaned up after dinner.
The RMH experience for everyone is very special, especially for our Interact Club members who met and played with the kids and families.
We plan to go to Hope Mission and prepare, serve, and cleanup for dinner on April 23. A special thank you to our Rotary drivers who provide the transport. We are always looking for driver recruits, so please advise if you would like to help. egermain@is2.ca
The Interact Club ran several successful fundraisers, including the Halloween Scary Movie, Christmas Candy Cane event, Valentine Flower-grams (courtesy of 100 roses provided by Heather de Kok’s Flower Shop). The Rotary Interact Club plans to keep busy to end of the school year.

Shelter Box Canada
Tuesday's guest speaker, Director of Shelter Box Canada, Stephanie Christensen, pictured, ex Calgarian and Calgary Flames fan, flew in from Toronto to meet with the local Strathcona High School students about their highly successful fundraising bike-athon, which raised over $200,000 for Shelter Box Canada.

Kudos to Rose Marie, who managed to have her come to our club as well, to give us a presentation on what ShelterBox is doing throughout the world.
Our club has donated over $14,000 dollars to Shelter Box Canada over the last five years. The Shelter box  program provides boxes containing hi tech tents tailored to local weather conditions, water purification kits, blankets, mosquito nets, solar powered lights (a sample of which she tried to bring to show us, but was confiscated by airline security) and other essential living supplies, as needed, tailored to provide a temporary home for displaced families around the world.
This year alone, there have been 19.3 million people displaced due to natural disasters and another 59.5 million displaced due to conflict. They also provide shelter kits containing the tools and items needed to repair damaged homes and boxes containing all of the supplies needed to get up a school up and running. They work with local governments and the UN to provide these where and when they are needed. They have supplies and trained volunteers positioned around the world so that they can respond quickly as needed. ShelterBox is based in the UK and all of their boxes are packed there by volunteers. Shelter Box Canada raises over 1.4 to 2.0 million dollars each year. They are partners with Rotary International and very much appreciate our ongoing contributions.

Rotary Foundation Refresher
Dimitri Papanicolas, who is the current club chair of the Rotary Foundation, gave us a presentation on the Foundation and how our local area and club fit into the overall picture. It was well done and comprehensive enough for both new and old members alike. We learned that the mission of the Foundation is to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace  through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.

This not-for-profit foundation, does this through voluntary donations from Rotary members and friends. They have several funds that one can contribute towards.
The Annual Share fund  supports grants and activities selected by local clubs.
A second type of Annual Fund involves donating to a specific area of focus such as water and sanitation, maternal and child health, education and literacy and several others.
A third type is Endowment Funds supporting various activities.
Polio Plus is another of the funds that is part of the Rotary Foundation. Each year our district and club set goals for donations to the Rotary Foundation. Our district 5370 goal is a donation of $100 US for each one of our 2266 members. This works out to about $ 12 per month, per member. So far this year (July 2015 to Mar 2016)  our area has raised over 225 thousand US dollars or the Share Fund, 139 thousand US dollars for Polio Plus and other funds, and over 260 thousand US dollars for endowment funds.
Our local club goal of $7300 US for the Annual fund, has also been met, as well as donations to the Polio Plus and endowment funds. On behalf of the Rotary Foundation, Dimitri thanked us all for our continuing support.

District 5370 Conference Report
During Tuesday's meeting, Vince Campbell gave us a short presentation of some hi-lites from the recently held District 5370 conference.
The new 2016-17 RI theme is 'Rotary Serving Humanity'.
The morning speakers spoke of the ever changing membership of Rotary, and how Rotary International both loses and gains about 1.2 million members every five to seven years. They also spoke of how we need to embrace social media more in order to attract and hold younger members.
The afternoon sessions were smaller and quite varied, and one he attended on Stop Hunger Now, especially inspired him. He spoke of how two clubs in our area have already managed to raise donations and find volunteers to package over 200,000 food packages each. He would like to see our Edmonton area clubs do the same, only on a larger scale.
Mar 18, and then there's...?
