Stories
District Governor, Ramesh Ferris

This past week we were happy to welcome our current District Governor, Ramesh Ferris, as our speaker.  Ramesh is a member of the Rotary Club of Whitehorse, Yukon and spoke to us via Zoom. Ramesh is a Polio survivor who has dedicated his life to increasing awareness and raising funds for Polio in Canada and around the world. In 2008 he hand-cycled across Canada from Victoria, BC, to Cape Spear in Newfoundland to raise funds and awareness for polio eradication, education and rehabilitation.

He encouraged our club to work together, lean on each other for support and brainstorm for new ideas on ways we can make our community and our world a better place. He emphasized that in Rotary, you do not do anything alone.

He told us that we have a strong team leading our Rotary District 5370 with eighteen committees to help support our fifty-six active clubs. He encouraged us to volunteer for District committees and also to continue our strong contributions to the Rotary Annual, Endowment. Polio and Disaster Funds.  He said that one of his goals this year is to ask each club to think about physical accessibility and to come up with an accessibility plan that will allow handicapped members to take part in our activities. He is also encouraging Rotarians to create short videos to share our Rotary experiences with others. He then encouraged us to attend the upcoming Rotary Conference, Teamwork Makes the Dreamwork, which will take place in Whitehorse, May 15-17.

His overall message to us was - be innovative, keep trying and don’t be afraid to fail, be afraid not to try.

We would like to thank Ramesh for taking the time to speak to us and his very inspirational talk.
Serena Bulesic, Rotary Student Scholarship Recipient

Club President Norman Leach with Serena Bulesic and Club Youth Services Representative, Carin Jansen van Vuuren

This week we were pleased to welcome Serena Bulesic, a recipient of our Student Scholarship that was awarded at our 50th Anniversary Dinner this past June. Serena is a very promising musician who wished to continue her studies in Violin at the University of Alberta. She came to tell us about what she has been doing recently. She is currently a student of Music at the U.of A. and is also studying with the concert master of the Edmonton Symphony. Over the summer and fall she also took several master classes with various well known violinists in both North America and Europe. She told us that she has learned so much from each one, especially how to think, to focus, and the discipline and organisation necessary to succeed in this field, along with technical skills such as various bowing techniques.  She feels that she has made tremendous progress in the last two years, especially because of all the different people she has worked with. This summer she has plans to go to Spain to study with a master there.

She is currently part of the U. of A. Symphony and the Chamber Music Academy here in Edmonton, both of which have concerts planned for this spring. The U. of A. Symphony on Feb 12 at Convocation Hall and the Chamber Music Academy in May at the Winspear. She said that she hopes in future to finish her B.A. here at the U. of A. then move to Europe to study further.

In closing she wonderfully played a favorite piece from her repertoire for us. We would like to thank Serena for coming to tell us all about her life and accomplishments the past few months and wish her all the best in the future.
