Carin with two members of the newly established Elder Dr Francis Whiskeyjack High School Interact Club, Tanya Singh and Jiya Patel. This past Saturday I attended District 5370’s RYLA (Rotary Youth Leader Awards) in Edmonton. The event was well attended with over 40 representatives from the whole district. After the welcoming by District youth chair Lesa Mueller she introduced Davina Merritt, Rotaract-Interact Chair for the University of Alberta Rotaract Club who gave the attendees an excellent synopsis of Rotary from it’s inception in 1905, it’s motto, it’s seven areas of focus to the goals 4-way test. Thereafter District Interact Chair, Abinash Saravanan, a former president of WP Wagner interact Club gave an explanation of what Interact is and what the executive positions all entail. We then heard from Tamara Larson on Peace. She highlighted the 8 Pillars of Positive Peace · Well-functioning government · Equitable distribution of resources · Free flow of information · Good relations with neighbors · High levels of human capital · Acceptance of the rights of others · Low levels of corruption · Sound business environment She reiterated each community can look at these pillars and better understand how they can create positive change in their backyard. |
