Art Baird died early this morning May 5. He went home yesterday, talked to the ambulance driver, had a coke, fell asleep and died sometimes between 2 and 7 am.
Art was recently made an honourary member recognizing his long and distinguised service to the club.
Art was introduced into Rotary and our club by Past president Peter Jorgensen in August 1986. He served as president in 1993-94 and was awarded with Rotarian of the Year Award in 1990-91. Art was a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.
We will miss his big smile and crushing handshake very much.
Funeral/memorial arrangements will be announced as they become available.
Please keep Joyce and the family in your thoughts.
This past Tuesday our club donated five thousand dollars to St. Theresa of Calcutta Community School. Kelly Laxdal, Assistant Principal, accepted on behalf of the school. Kelly then gave a presentation on the many programs that this inner-city school offers to it’s students and members of it’s local community. St. Theresa of Calcutta is a kindergarten to grade six Catholic school that has been in existence for thirteen years. It currently has 329 students, of which 153 are ‘English as a second language’ students. Most of the families and students in this disadvantaged neighborhood need help, on a daily basis, from many different supporting agencies, and the school serves to facilitate this in many different ways.
President Dimitri, Kelly Laxdal and Rick Harcourt, Services Director
The school offers a hot breakfast, snack and hot lunch program to all of it’s students five days a week throughout the school year. The program is supported from school funds, the E4C program and private donations. This program helps immensely with giving students the energy they need to focus and learn each day. They ask families to contribute twenty dollars per month, per family, if they are able to, but most simply do not have the funds. The school also partners with many other groups to provide enrichment for their students. One of the partnerships is with the Edmonton
Symphony Orchestra. Thirty-three students from the school currently participate in learning to play various instruments, with instruction provided freely by members of the Edmonton Symphony, who come to the school several times a week. Their next concert will be at the Winspear on 24 June.
The school also partners with high school students from O’Leary High School, who come to the school on a regular basis to take part in and mentor various activities. One class each week also visits a local seniors center to take part in their exercise program, and once a month they go to help celebrate the monthly birthday party. The school also partners with the Inner-City Children’s Project to offer child care services for students before school hours. In addition, they partner with EPCOR staff to provide for special holiday guests such as the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus to bring experiences and treats that these children might otherwise not receive. The school also provides Save-On grocery certificates and free transportation donated by cab companies to medical and other appointments as needed by local families.
Our funding will go towards their Artist in Residence program which will result in a school mural, and also towards providing for a Spring Family BBQ on June 27, and a Christmas Family Dinner in December 2017.
This school, and many others in the Edmonton area, acts as a hub for many different types of services that help struggling families to get a foothold and provide for the prospect of a brighter future for all of our children. They also provide a good source of opportunities, for us as a service club, to provide community support in any way that we can.

Office area at the Red Deer Municipal Airport, c. 1967. Note the sign for Johnston Air Services. Man on the left is Ron McCullough, who was a City Councilor representative on the Muncipal Airport Commission.
Publ. What Ken did not know was that the gentleman second from the right is John Martin. John was our Charter Vice President, and in a moment of delirium introduced Ron into Rotary and our club in September 1975.
I invite Ron to provide some further commentary.
BTW, it is the sixties alright. Note the neat fedoras and Ron's thick head of hair not needing one -- Oh and the large ashtray on the table.
Rtn. Jerry Kelly from Victoria, formerly with the RC Edmonton, joined us at the zoo and gave us an invitation to join other golfers from around the world to their 54th golf tournament in Victoria BC. The "International Golfing Fellowship of Rotary" is one of the oldest Rotary Fellowships.
