Legendary singer and polio survivor Donovan Leitch, better known simply as Donovan, has joined Rotary in its fight to eradicate the paralyzing disease that afflicted him during much of his childhood.

This past Tuesday we were treated to an updated classification talk by one of our long time members, Augie Annicchiarico.
Augie first joined Rotary in 1990 and has the classification of Chartered Accounting. He has served on our club executive several times over the years.
Augie was born in Campagna, Italy, the second of five children, and came to Canada at the age of nine. They settled in Edmonton. He spoke of how he was able to catch up quickly with his English speaking, same age school mates in Canada, by becoming part of an accelerated grade program in Elementary School in Edmonton. He said that their home was multi-lingual as his parents spoke Italian to the children, and the children spoke English to their parents. In the process, many words were invented, as the two vocabularies did not mesh completely. He attended St Alphonsus Elementary Junior High and St Joseph High School. He then went on to attend the U of A where he studied Commerce, specialising in Accounting.
While there he decided to take a course in Italian as he did not speak, read or write Italian very well. As part of this, he joined the Italian club, where he met his future wife Jaqueline. Once he graduated he joined a large accounting firm specialising in banking, and he obtained his Chartered Accountant certification soon afterwards. He worked for them for about ten years, and then in 1977, decided to take on a partner and go into business on his own. This choice has worked out well for him, and his firm now has over thirty employees.
Along the way he has served on the executive and helped to raise money for many different charitable causes. The first on being the earthquake in Italy in 1982, for which they raised over four hundred thousand dollars, which they donated to the Red Cross. It was such a large number of donations that the Red Cross needed help with generating receipts, so Augie took a team from his firm over to help out. As a result of this he ended up being asked to sit in their Board, which he did for several years. He also helped to raise large amount of funds for his church to build a new recreation center. He has also coached minor Soccer and also the soccer team at Concordia High School, and the boys team from this very small school of 150 kids (boys and girls), managed to win a silver medal in the final competition.
When he joined our Rotary group, he served as treasurer and helped to set up a proper financial reporting system for our club. He also loves to golf and has spent many years on the executive of his golf club and also with Alberta Golf. He continues to generously volunteer his time and expertise to various charitable causes.
As Dave Rayner so ably put it in his thank-you to Augie, these types of talks, from long time members, serve to illustrate things about us as people and Rotarians, that never come out any other way. When we put service above self, we truly embody the spirit of Rotarians.

The procedure applies to both Rotarians and non-Rotarians involved in any Rotary sponsored vulnerable person activity.
Have a vulnerable persons record check completed.
Submit your application with the Club’s letter of introduction (obtained by Hans Granholm) to the local police service.
After you receive the certificate, submit the original (photocopies are not accepted) to the address in my signature below or alternately deliver to the District office.
Original is reviewed by Youth Protection Chair, Staff Sergeant Brian Scott.
Original and letter of certification are returned to volunteer directly.
Provide a photocopy to the club.
Certification lasts for a period of three years.
Police procedure:

Certification is free of charge and sometimes they will complete the certification while you wait (if you have time to wait).
Edmonton Police Service (EPS)
EPS charges $15 for the certification and be aware that they accept cheque or money order ONLY. No cash or plastic. Cheque or money order should be made out to “City of Edmonton”.
The certificate will be mailed to you, usually within a week.

Looking for approx. 30 volunteers - Positions / Shifts are as follows: (see below)
Set up Support 6:00AM to 8:00AM Job Description & Duties
As Set Up Support, you will be assisting with all set up the morning of the tournament. There will be a team of YESS staff members and volunteers working under the direction of the Event Coordinator. After Set Up is complete and the golfing has begun, you may assist with tent turn-overs for post-golf needs, as well as doing any and all teardown that can be done during that time (i.e. teardown of things that will not be needed post-golf), if you are available. Event Coordinator will have a detailed list of what needs to be done and will designate tasks as needed. Duties are as follows:
- Assist with the unloading and sorting of bins and supplies from truck
- Assist with set up of all hole activities
- This will need to be complete by 9:30AM
- Most holes will need tables and chairs, and some will need tents (please refer to Sponsor Hole Needs from Event Coordinator for details)
- Sponsors are directed to be set up at their hole by 9:30AM, and will begin arriving at 8AM
- Hole Activity Monitor volunteers arrive at 9:00AM, and will be driven out to their holes between 9:15 and 9:30. They can assist with any last-minute set up, as needed
- Assist with set up of all tents and tables near the golf course clubhouse
- Assist with set up of interior of clubhouse
- All set up bins will be clearly labelled and ready to be placed at designated hole or area
- Area Supervisors are responsible for setting up their area (e.g. Event Coordinator must ensure that Registration has all of its necessary bins and supplies, but Registration Supervisor and/or volunteers are responsible for setting up the area)
- Event Coordinator will have more detailed notes on all set up processes
Sponsor Assistant 7:30AM to 10:00AM Job Description & Duties
As a Sponsor Assistant, your role will be to assist the Sponsor Coordinator with seeing to the needs of sponsors in the morning of the tournament. This may involve setting up sponsor signage, greeting sponsors in the morning, and coordinating with Sponsor Assistant or Coordinator to drive sponsors out to their designated hole for setting up their activity/food. Duties are as follows:
- Sign in at Volunteer Table and ensure you receive your volunteer lanyard and t-shirt
- Assist Sponsor Coordinator to place sponsor signage around golf course and at appropriate holes, if not yet complete upon your arrival
- Sponsors will begin arriving around 8AM and will be greeted by Sponsor Coordinator and Sponsor Assistant
- Sponsor Assistant or Coordinator will advise sponsors of which hole they will be at for the day, but you will also have a list and map
- Sponsors will need to be set up by 9:30AM
- There will be volunteers on all designated holes by 9:30AM
- Transport of sponsor and food/supplies will be arranged by Sponsor Coordinator or Assistant, and they will inform you of which sponsor you will be driving
- There will be 2-3 Sponsor Aides who will each have access to a golf cart to transport sponsors and supplies to holes
- Please try to be efficient when dropping off sponsors and returning to Valet Table, as other sponsors may be waiting for transport. But remember to drive safely!
- After shift is complete, please sign out at Volunteer Table or head to next volunteer position, if staying for the day
Photography Assistant 8:00AM to 3:30PM Job Description & Duties
As Photography Assistant, your role will be to assist our photographer from One Step Beyond with photographing the event. Photos will be taken of golfers, staff, volunteers, and signage. Duties are as follows:
- Sign in at Volunteer Table and ensure you receive your volunteer lanyard and t-shirt
- Volunteer Coordinator will arrange for you to be introduced to photographer
- You will assist photographer with carrying equipment, driving the golf cart and setting up for shots, as needed
- Photographer is tasked with photographing the entire event, from start until finish
- He needs photos of all sponsor signs, activities, contests, food, golfers, volunteers, staff, décor, etc.
- He will have a list of shots he is required to take. Please assist him with ensuring he gets all of these shots
- Encourage golfers, staff and volunteers to have fun with the photos!
Registration Support 8:00AM to 10:00AM Job Description & Duties
As Registration Support, you will register golfers as they arrive for the day, accept payment for golf fees and advise golfers which team they are playing on. You will ensure their golf bags are properly tagged with their team number. Duties are as follows:
- Sign in at Volunteer Table and ensure you receive your volunteer lanyard and t-shirt
- Greet the golfers and thank them for coming
- Check golfers / teams off of the list as they arrive
- Some golfers may be registered under their own name
- Some golfers may only be registered as ‘Guest’ of a company
- You will have registration lists for both of these
- If a golfer has not yet paid his/her fees for the tournament, collect payment if they ask to pay at that time, following all payment procedures – Deanne will be at the registration desk to assist with payments.
- Do not ask any golfers to pay. If they haven’t paid yet and they do not ask to pay at the tournament, YESS will follow up with them after the tournament to collect payment
- Remind golfers of their starting hole number and tee-off time
- Provide golfers with information about the day, such as 50/50 sales, Red Tee Ribbons sales and Mulligan sales (there will be a separate table nearby Registration for purchasing these)
- Direct golfers to breakfast area inside golf club house
- More detailed Registration processes will be explained to volunteers upon arrival at the course
Volunteer Relief Teams 10:00AM to 4:00PM Job Description & Duties
Volunteer Relief Teams are responsible for ensuring that all volunteer Hole Monitors receive adequate breaks, food and plenty of water. As Hole Monitors are unable to leave their hole unattended and will not have access to a golf cart, it is important you are not lingering at one hole for too long to ensure that all volunteers are having bathroom breaks, a chance to get out of the sun, and are staying properly hydrated.
There will be two teams of Volunteer Relief volunteers to provide breaks and lunch to volunteers out on the course – you will be paired up with another volunteer. Each pair will be provided with a golf cart for the day as well as a map of the golf course, for which each pair will be responsible for covering 9 of the 18 holes. You will be instructed on which holes have volunteers and what to bring them in terms of food and drinks. Duties are as follows:
Sign in at the volunteer table upon arrival, and sign out at the end of your shift
The Volunteer Supervisor or Assistant will:
Provide you with your volunteer t-shirt and lanyard.
Assign you a golf cart
Introduce you to the other member of your Volunteer Relief Team
Provide you with a map indicating which holes you are responsible for covering
Many of the golf holes are serving food or beverages. Around lunch time, you will go to the holes with food/drinks and gather an assortment of food for the volunteers. You will deliver the food to the volunteers, and make sure they have enough water for the afternoon
Throughout the day, drive around your half of the course to check in on volunteers
If a volunteer needs a break from the sun or to use the washroom, one member of your team will stay behind at the golf hole while the other drives the volunteer to the clubhouse for their break
Alternatively, both Volunteer Reliefs can stay at the hole and the Hole Monitors can take the golf cart to the clubhouse on their own. If this is the case, ensure you get instructed on what the activity or food is at the hole you’ll be covering. No hole must be left unattended for any length of time.
Please be careful while driving the golf cart, and follow all golf cart rules and etiquette
o Be aware when golfers are taking a shot. Please stop your cart and wait until the entire team has finished their turn
o Be aware of stray golf balls – especially if monitoring a hole in one!
o Please stay on the cart path and do not drive on the green
o Be careful crossing roadways, as part of the cart path crosses a residential road (look for traffic and pedestrians before crossing)
- While it may be tempting to stay stopped at a specific hole and hang out with people you may know, please remember that volunteers are relying on you to come around regularly!
- Volunteers are not permitted to consume alcoholic beverages.
Hole Monitors 9:00AM to 4:30PM Job Description & Duties
As Hole Monitor, you will be assigned to a specific hole to be stationed at for the duration of the tournament. Your role will be to be to explain and monitor any contests or activities happening at your assigned hole, to watch for any hole in ones, to give away swag/food/drinks/etc. or other duties as required at your specific assignment. The vast majority of the holes have been sponsored by various company or community partners, and thus they will have signage placed around the hole. Encourage golfers to participate in the activities and have a good time!
- Sign in at Volunteer Table and ensure you receive your volunteer lanyard and t-shirt
- Volunteer Coordinator will brief you on your hole assignment and arrange for you to be taken out to the hole that you will be monitoring
It is your responsibility to become familiar with the contest rules and prizes (all information will be provided for you)
- Important: do not talk or distract the golfer when they are teeing off
- Keep your area neat, tidy and free of garbage
- Food and water will be brought to you throughout the day, and breaks will be provided by our Volunteer Relief Teams
- You are welcome to walk to the clubhouse if you need a break (some holes are much closer than others)
- If you see a staff or other volunteer on a golf cart, you can ask to catch a ride with them.
- Do not ask golfers for rides!
- You will have Violet’s cell phone number at the hole – please text if there is something urgent.
Hole #4: Hole-in-One Spotting
Volunteers:
Your role: Monitor the hole for any hole-in-ones! You will be situated near the green – watch for wayward balls heading in your direction!
If someone gets a hole in one:
- Congratulate them
