Angus Watt, Are We in a Gold Rush

Angus Watt with Club President Loida Lumanlan

This week our club was pleased to welcome Angus Watt, founding member of Angus Watt Advisory Group and Senior Advisor for National Bank Financial as our speaker.  Angus began by telling us that the coming year will be very challenging for Canadians to find a path forward. The current economic climate in the US with Republican supporters who want to return to the type of economy we had in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, with lots of blue collar jobs, clashes with other Republican supporters who promote the new age of technology and it’s use of artificial intelligence and this will create challenges.

He then proceeded to present and discuss graphs showing how various Canadian economic indicators have varied over time such as Interest and Mortgage Rates, Stock Market Values, Rates of Inflation, Commodity Prices, National and Provincial Fiscal Policies and Debt, Money Supply, Immigration, Provincial Population Changes, and Supply of Electrical Power all affect how our economy in Alberta and Canada will do in the coming year.

He then spoke in particular about how the supply of electrical power varies across Canada and the effect this will have on our economy here in Alberta. He said that with the conversion to electric vehicles and the advent of Artificial Intelligence, which has the potential to be an economic driver, will challenge power supply and the cost of power across Canada. The challenges will vary from province, but the bottom line is we currently have no excess power generation in Canada, the provinces that currently generate more power than needed sell it to the US.  Provinces that have the flexibility to generate more power at a reasonable price will have an advantage in the new AI economy.  This means that Alberta has an advantage, as building a gas powered generator is much easier than building a new hydro dam. Electric power generation will become the latest ‘Gold Rush’ and has the potential to become a big driver of our economy in the future.
Angus then showed how Alberta has an advantage compared to the other provinces in terms of fiscal debt and population growth. He said that Alberta already sells it’s main exports, grain, oil and gas in US currency.

In closing he said that as a result, when considering the overall effect of Tariffs, Fiscal Policies, Immigration, Currency, Power Supply and Artificial Intelligence on the Alberta economy, we, in Alberta, are looking at a stable future.

We would like to thank Angus for his very interesting and insightful presentation.

Rotary Club of Edmonton Riverview Puzzle Fundraiser

This week we had a visit by John Williams from the Rotary Club of Edmonton Riverview to promote their recent club Fundraiser, a 500 piece puzzle with some very appropriate Edmonton river valley views. They are selling for thirty dollars each and would make a great gift for any and all.
You can arrange to obtain one by contacting Nelson Scott at nmscott@telus.net.

Wendy Fung Reuscher, New Member Induction

Newest Member Wendy Fung Reuscher with Club President Loida Lumanlan

This week we were pleased to welcome our newest member, Wendy Fung Reuscher. Wendy was sponsored by Carin Jansen van Vuuren and her classification will be Government Agencies. Stephan Jansen van Vuuren, our Membership Chair formally inducted her to our club although she has been an informal member for many years as the widow of one of our long-time former members Bernd Reuscher. We would like to welcome Wendy to our club and look forward to getting to know her better. Welcome Wendy!

Percy Page Rotary Interact visit to Ronald McDonald House

The Rotary Interact Club Percy Page School went to Ronald MacDonald House on December 12, 2024 to provide, prepare, serve, and clean up for the Home For Dinner program for the evening.

They made a great supper featuring vegetarian and Italian sausage beef lasagnas, Ceasar salad and cookies for dessert. The RMH residents really appreciated the complimentary dinner prepared and served with many smiles.

The RMH Programs and Family Services Coordinator Jenna Black provided a very good tour of RMH, highlighting their well designed home away from home for sick kids and their families, the Magic Room, and told a few touching stories. Including the story of the young girl that was a big Taylor Swift fan, who they gave a great big Swiftie party for when she was given only a few weeks to live.
Thanks to Kyra Briske our Percy Page Rotary Interact Teacher, and Rotarian Carin Jansen van Vuuren for their help on the day, and keeping the girls focused on the tasks at hand. And the Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona for providing the groceries for the day. A great way to celebrate the Holiday Season and give back to the community. Making the World a Better Place.

Interact Club Visit to Ronald McDonald House

The Rotary Interact Club of Elder Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack High School, the brand-new Southeast Edmonton high school sponsored and advised by the Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona, went to Ronald McDonald House for the Home For Dinner Program on December 6th.

They provided the groceries, prepared the excellent vegetarian and beef chilis , and served the dinner for the 80 to 100 residents at RMH. They had a great tour of RMH and appreciated that it is the home away from home for many families who travel to Edmonton from all over Western Canada for the excellent pediatric medical services.

The Rotary Interact Club members did a great job, and plan to visit RMH in the spring for another Home For Dinner evening. Thanks to our Rotary Interact teachers Pearl Wielki and Jorg Bauer, and our Rotary drivers for the day Vince and Ann Campbell and Ken Germain.

This new Rotary Interact Club has over 25 active members and has our Rotary Club Interact Advisors Chelsea Leach and Eric Germain to help them on their journey of making their school, community, and the world a better place, while having fun and developing friendships.

Christmas Dinner and Donation to Kids Kottage

Our club enjoyed a delicious meal and some wonderful entertainment at our Christmas Dinner which was held at Manila Grill this year.

We were also thanked by Amanda Adkins, Development Director from Kids Kottage for our donations of clothing, toys and cash.  She told us that Kids Kottage provides a frontline shelter caring for children in crisis due to being homeless, in poverty or suffering trauma. The children can range in age from babies to ten years of age. Kids Kottage takes them in and tries to get them and their families the help they need.

Rosslyn Scouts Donation to Kids Kottage

Rosslyn Scout Leaders Amy and Russel with Amanda Adkins from Kids Kottage

We were glad to hear that the Rosslyn Scouts, upon hearing about our club’s donation to Kids Kottage, also decided to make a donation of clothing, toys and money. Their Commissioner Russell Bridgeman told us that Kids Kottage is located right in their neighbourhood and their members from Cubs all the way up to Rovers were happy to help as part of their community service initiative.

They directly dropped off several bags of new clothing. One of their Troop Scouters Chris Colby with his son (Cub) and daughter (Beaver) helped. Chris's wife Jessica Minion, our Beaver Colony contact Scouter, who works at Pet Smart, arranged the donation of 120 stuffed animals and Amy Caddell, their Troop Contact Scouter made additional $100 donation to Kids Kottage from their bottle drive.
