A new email purporting to be from Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Ray Klinginsmith is targeting Rotary members. The email falsely claims that members can become End Polio Now ambassadors if they email club information to a Gmail address within 48 hours. The fraudulent email has the subject line “BECOME AN END POLIO AMBASSADOR” and is sent from a fake email address. This is a scam. Rotary staff is working to resolve the issue. Avoid being the victim of scams by deleting any email that appears suspicious.

Roses for Interact Club at J Percy Page
Heather de Kok, Master Florist and Past President of the club, very generously, donated 100 beautiful long stem red roses to the Interactors at J Percy Page High School prior to Valentines day Feb 14th.
This has been an annual occurrence enabling the Interact Club to raise funds for specific projects.
Here is a thank you note from the teacher liaison, Karen Huculak:

  •
"We really appreciate the donation of 100 roses!

After 3 lunch hours, we sold them all and raised $200.00 to go towards a worthy cause....possibly to support the Syrian refugees through Islamic Family and Social Services Association (IFSSA)."
Thank you Heather and get better soon.
Meals for Meals on Wheels
Thank you to all the volunteers, especially spouse/partners and new and near new members. Well done!

Thanks so much to you and your crew for helping out this morning. We were happy to have your help! I managed to take a couple of pictures, which I’ve attached.

Q: Why did everyone in Minneapolis quit going to church and lose their faith?

A: There are a dozen or so pages in the Bible about St. Paul, but nothing about Minneapolis.

When you wish someone joy, you wish them peace, love, prosperity, happiness - all the good things.     -- Maya Angelou
Connor Pilz highlights CNIB
Connor Pilz, Manager, Major Giving with CNIB, was smartly introduced at our Feb 2nd meeting by his dad and club member, Hans.

Connor gave an excellent presentation on the subject of a 3-D printer CNIB has been longing for, and with some assistance of this club and one of our members in particular, Fritz Koenig, they now have the major equipment on order.
His talk went into a detailed description of the functionality of a 3-D printer and it is absolutely amazing. Talk about technology on the edge! Read more about 3 D printing.

In the fall of 2015, a Southgate Centre exhibition of original 3-D paintings of dutch master Vincent van Gogh was on display. What was unique about the exhibition was that the public was encouraged to touch and feel the painting, something you could never do on the original canvas. Connor explained that the 3-D reproduction was so precise it actually included the natural cracks in the old paint.

Clients of CNIB were encouraged to 'feel' the 'paintings' and in a relatively short order they were able to comment on the scene and make comparisons with personal encounters of similar scenes.

This is truly an eye opener for the sight challenged members of our society.

Newsletter Opportunity

Ken Germain in his younger days

We want to thank Ken Germain for his tremendous contribution to keep members posted about news items, opportunities, stories and light entertainment for the last several years.
I am not trying to fill his shoes, I never could, but we can't ignore the power of information sharing and as most of you know, communication is my bag, so I'm plugging along, but I need your help.
Please forward stories, information and news you would like to share. I like to publish Friday morning, so call it Thursday evening as the deadline for submissions.
You can submit material in just about any format, but try and avoid PDF documents as it is very difficult to re-format. Pictures: any format. (Publ.)

Ken:
Having had fun for 4 or 5 years as Editor of the Strathconian Newsletter, I feel it's time for someone else to enjoy the job.

Beginning the New Year, you can be creative and be an active part of the club's information network.

About an hour a week is all that's required.

Let me know.
