Stories
Mother Teresa School and YONA

Our speaker on Tuesday, Jan 19th, was Mother Teresa Elementary School Principal Dean Sullivan.

Principal Dean Sullivan

Dean is a school administrator for 12 years running and an inner-city high-needs school Principal at Mother Teresa Catholic School for 8 years wherein lies his passion.

Dean is a professional musician who seeks to bring music to students whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Three years ago the YONA Sistema (Youth Orchestra Northern Alberta) program started at Mother Teresa with twenty young students. The program has now grown to sixty and in doing so has outgrown the physical capacity of Mother Teresa, hence the bulk of the program moved to St. Alphonsus School close by.

The young students, from grades 1-2 and up started out with violins and they have now moved on to violas, cellos and bases. In late 2015 a percussion section was added.

The YONA program is sponsored by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and member musicians take an active role in teaching and mentoring the young students. The program is a full social activity program with music as the main focus and it operates every weekday afternoon after regular school hours.

Volunteer Opportunity in Belize
We need chaperones to facilitate interact Club members from Victoria School and Lillian Osborne School to go to Belize City for a playground build project.

We need 2 chaperones for this trip, and if we cannot find 2 chaperones the Interactors will not be able to participate in this project.

The group will leave on February 19th and return on February 27th. There are 6 to 8 students, all female, that are planning to go.

This is an opportunity to participate in an international service project as well as mentor these young people as ambassadors for Rotary and for Canada.. They are in the final stages of planning for this trip.

For anyone who has never been, Belize is a beautiful country. English is the main language so it's easy to get around.

Please consider this project, if you are able to be a chaperone please let me know as soon as possible.

I can provide more detailed information for anyone who would be interested.  Lets make this happen for the Interactors

Thanks!

Yours in Rotary,
Carol Devereaux

Newsletter Opportunity

Ken Germain in his younger days

We want to thank Ken Germain for his tremendous contribution to keep members posted about news items, opportunities, stories and light entertainment for the last several years.
I am not trying to fill his shoes, I never could, but we can't ignore the power of information sharing and as most of you know, communication is my bag, so I'm plugging along, but I need your help.
Please forward stories, information and news you would like to share. I like to publish Friday morning, so call it Thursday evening as the deadline for submissions.
You can submit material in just about any format, but try and avoid PDF documents as it is very difficult to re-format. Pictures: any format. (Publ.)

Ken:
Having had fun for 4 or 5 years as Editor of the Strathconian Newsletter, I feel it's time for someone else to enjoy the job.

Beginning the New Year, you can be creative and be an active part of the club's information network.

About an hour a week is all that's required.

Let me know.
