On Wednesday, March 25, a special Family Night was held for Indigenous students and their families at Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack School.
Dr. Whiskeyjack opened the evening with a meaningful message, sharing that spring marks the beginning of a new year—a time for renewal, gratitude, and courage. He encouraged everyone to give thanks for what they have and to embrace the season with a positive spirit.
The event was very well attended, with over 120 people coming together to celebrate. Guests enjoyed a delicious supper, catered by the Interact Club students, who did a wonderful job assisting throughout the evening. Our club contributed by donating buns and drinks for the meal.
Activities included bingo, an Easter egg hunt, and prize giveaways, creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere for all ages.
It was an absolute privilege to spend time with Dr. Whiskeyjack and his wife, Elsey, and to hear them share their life experiences.
A beautiful mural has been installed at the school entrance, depicting the life journey of Dr. Whiskeyjack. One of his most powerful reflections reads:
“From my life journey, I’ve learned to let go of anger that can keep you stuck. I have chosen to focus on helping others, especially youth. For our youth to succeed, they must do their best, feel proud of who they are, and understand where they come from.”
Overall, it was a highly successful and uplifting event that brought families and community members together in celebration and connection.
