Whenever I arrive in a new country, one of the first places I go is a bookstore. I do this for several reasons. Having spent much of my life and income in them, I always find them to be comforting spaces. And they often stock more specific maps and guides than you can get outside the country. But the real reason I love these places is that by scanning the titles for sale – just gazing down the spines – I can get a glimpse of how people in that country see themselves. What stories do they tell? What stories do they read? What books do they print? And what do they import from abroad? And though...

Rotary members, their families and friends can support Rotary’s work by bidding on antiques, artwork, jewelry, and collectibles through eBay Live Auctions events. Each month, Rotary will promote on its social media outlets a set of upcoming Live Auctions events, and eBay, the world’s largest auction website, will donate a portion of all sale proceeds from those events to Rotary. Live Auctions events enable buyers to participate in auctions across the United States -- held at such auction houses as Sotheby’s, Swann, and Freeman’s -- without leaving home. Under this proceeds-sharing...

Forms in additional languages are now available to help you record individual donations to The Rotary Foundation or single donations that combine gifts from several club members. You can get blank or personalized versions of the forms in English, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish by signing in to My Rotary and visiting the Manage My Club section of the Club and District Administration page. You can also contribute at www.rotary.org/give.

In his address to convention attendees on Tuesday, 31 May, Trustee Chair Ray Klinginsmith proclaimed that The Rotary Foundation has never been stronger than it is today. Bolstered by generous contributions from members and robust programs like PolioPlus and the Rotary Peace Centers, the Foundation's good work is drawing public notice, Klinginsmith said: CNBC, a leading consumer and business news outlet in the U.S., ranked Rotary No. 5 among the top 10 charities changing the world in 2015. "Isn't it clear that our Foundation is truly better than ever before?" said Klinginsmith, who reported...

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was among the first to welcome Rotary members and friends to the 107th Rotary Convention, heralded as one of the largest-ever gatherings of Rotarians and the most multicultural assembly of nonprofit leaders in Korea. He offered a message of gratitude: “Rotarians do remarkable work around the world,” Ban told the thousands of attendees gathered at KINTEX, the Korea International Exhibition and Convention Center in Goyang city, on the outskirts of Seoul. “You help the United Nations reach our goals, and you help the world understand the United...

Porkapalooza Festival in Aid of Fort McMurray

Good day Rotary friends,

The producers of the annual Porkapalooza Festival have generously offered to donate proceeds from their festival this year to the Rotary District 5370 Charitable Foundation's Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund and renamed their event the "Concert of Hope".  I have attached information about the festival, which takes place June 17, 18, and 19 at Clarke Stadium/Field in Edmonton.   We have also been offered the opportunity to collect donations on site during the festival and we need about 50 Rotarians for this.  There will be tents with tables and chairs set up for this purpose.  Shifts will be approximately four hours.

Open the full brochure here.

If you can help, please register using the following link:

http://vols.pt/js89Za

If the spots are all filled, you may wish to consider helping out as a volunteer for the Festival itself, at the following link:

volunteers!

Finally, please support the festival and encourage your friends and neighbours to support it as well.  If you are able to serve as a festival sponsor, please also consider doing so.

Many thanks for your assistance.

- Julius Buski, President

Fraud Prevention TIps
On Tuesday we listened to a very informative talk from Dave Rodwell, a retired RCMP officer, who is now a private corporate crime consultant. He spoke to us about how to recognize and prevent becoming a victim of the many types of fraud and scams that we are constantly being exposed to. Last year various frauds and scams resulted in the loss of over 12.2 billion dollars in Canada alone, and these were only the reported ones. There are many more that go unreported, as people are too embarrassed to admit they have been victimised. The basic premise of fraud and scams is 'If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is.'

Some of the currently circulating scams involve cheap car insurance ( you pay but there is no insurance when you go to make a claim), unclaimed large estates where you too may be an heir ( for a fee, of course), phone calls from the CRA or even the IRS ( they got the script wrong) asking you to send gift card numbers or banking information, or purchasing items by mail ( you pay but the item never arrives). Other scams involve facebook 'friends' that eventually ask you to pay for airfare so they can come and visit you, (but they never show up), or the secret shopper scam, where you purchase items on your credit and they repay you when you send the item on to them ( of course they send you a list of so many items to find that you never get ahead of what they owe you).

Some tips to avoid being taken easily are to do your due diligence, check it out, 'go with your gut' or intuition, before you put money in. For computers, use strong passwords for your online accounts, use a separate e-mail account to make online purchases, activate your computer firewall, use encryption software if your computer contains sensitive information. Store sensitive files on a separate drive from your main computer and back them up regularly and use your antivirus software to block spyware.

His last piece of advice was that if you have been scammed, get over your embarrassment, and report it to the authorities, so they can hopefully prevent others from also becoming victims.

Hawaiian Feast a la Kerr
Caren and Skip Kerr hosted a great many members and guests in their home at Oktober Fest last year. View photo album from last year's fest.

Police Check
President Harald reminded members about the District Volunteer Security Policy, DOWNLOAD HERE.

This policy was generated from the requirement of our insurance company providing liability coverage in case of issues arising from members and non-Rotarians working with youth and other vulnerable members of our society.

The policy provides that all involved Rotarians and non-Rotarians complete a vulnerable persons police check.  See below or click 'Read more...'

Contact Hans Granholm, 780-466-5566 for more information.
