Interact clubs are making a positive difference in schools and communities around the world. Leaders of sponsor Rotary clubs and districts should make sure their Interact clubs get the recognition they deserve by verifying that they qualify for a Presidential Citation.

We have all watched and heard the horrific flash fire emergency unfolding in Fort McMurray, and many of you may be wondering how you may help. So here is a run down on ways to do just that.

A member of the Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona, who wishes to remain anonymous, has pledged to match any of our members' donations dollar for dollar up to $1,000. As of the time of this writing we have no deadline for the matching grants, but we suggest you submit your pledge on or before Friday May 13th. In the short term most of their needs are being taken care of by The Red Cross and similar emergency response organizations. They are aware of the offers of help from throughout the district and have shared that with all of their club members. They will be sure to direct anyone in need of help either to a local Rotary club or the District office where we will make sure their needs are taken care of.
What we have heard is that the biggest need will be in the medium to long term once they are back in their homes and can assess what is needed. That's where Rotary comes in! What we do best is stay in for the long term and help through projects and donations once the needs are determined. I promised all Rotarians from Fort McMurray that Rotary International will be there to help them as long as it takes to get them going again. That is where we need your support. The Rotary District 5370 Charitable Foundation has established the “Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund” to assist in the rebuilding of that city following this tragic fire. The Charitable Foundation is now ready to accept donations, for which tax receipts will be issued. The Foundation will rely on an independent committee of Fort McMurray stakeholders (including the Rotary clubs and the municipality) for advice on disbursal of the funds.
Donations may be from individuals or corporations. Rotary clubs may wish to facilitate this process by collecting donations, and then forwarding either the individual cheques or a cheque drawn on the club’s account for the total amount, along with a list of the donors and their addresses and postal codes.

On Tuesday we heard a very interesting talk from Rob Richardson, who is a board member for Bridges to Prosperity.
Bridges to Prosperity is a US based Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) that designs and builds footbridges in communities around the world.
Rob's day job is working as an engineer and project manager for the North East Henday project. In his spare time he works for Bridges to Prosperity, as chairman of the Technical Advisory Board.
They have built over 200 footbridges in over 20 countries, some of them being in Rwanda, Bolivia, Nicaragua and Guatemala. The bridges are designed to meet US standards and built with donated steel and concrete materials and volunteer labour. The bridges are a suspension design that can withstand heavy use and are situated strategically in such a way that they will not be affected by storm floods or shifting riverbeds. They cost approximately twenty thousand dollars each and take about one week to construct once the footings are in place. They are built in locations where they can improve access to health care facilities, schools and markets for the local population. The final design for each bridge is prepared and built by University students under the supervision of a technical mentor and instructor using the design plan supplied by Bridges to Prosperity. The bridges are considered to be the property of the local community who are trained and expected to perform regular maintenance to the bridge deck. Bridges to Prosperity also goes in about every five years to inspect their bridges.
The average lifetime of the bridges is expected to be thirty years. Bridges to Prosperity tries to partner with groups who support building health and educational facilities in order to improve access and create a mutually beneficial project.
The Rotary Interact Club of J. Percy Page High School recently presented a cheque for $200 to the Edmonton Islamic Family Social Services to assist with their work helping Syrian families settle into the Edmonton community. Ghada Ageel, Refugee Support Manager for the Islamic Social Services Association and her colleague attended the Rotary Interact Club meeting to accept the cheque from Rotary Interact Club President Sophie Berube and her fellow Rotary Interactors.
Ms. Ageel was very complimentary and grateful for the funds and the community initiative to assist the local Syrian refugees. She commented on what a great initiative this was for young people to recognize the global concern for displaced Syrian families, and to take positive action to address it. Ms. Ageel stated, “Your financial support is very much appreciated and helps us continue our work to assist Syrian families settling in our community”.
The $200 in funds was raised by the Rotary Interact Club selling 100 roses for Valentine’s Day. The roses were generously donated by Heather de Kok’s Grower Direct Flower Store.
President Harald reminded members on Tuesday about the District Volunteer Security Policy, DOWNLOAD HERE.
This policy was generated from the requirement of our insurance company providing liability coverage in case of issues arising from members and non-Rotarians working with youth and other vulnerable members of our society.

District 5370 Police Record Check Process
The procedure applies to both Rotarians and non-Rotarians involved in any Rotary sponsored vulnerable person activity.
Have a vulnerable persons record check completed.
Submit your application with the Club’s letter of introduction (obtained by Hans Granholm) to the local police service.
After you receive the certificate, submit the original (photocopies are not accepted) to the address in my signature below or alternately deliver to the District office.
Original is reviewed by Youth Protection Chair, Staff Sergeant Brian Scott.
Original and letter of certification are returned to volunteer directly.
Provide a photocopy to the club.
Certification lasts for a period of three years.

Certification is free of charge and sometimes they will complete the certification while you wait (if you have time to wait).
Edmonton Police Service (EPS)
EPS charges $15 for the certification and be aware that they accept cheque or money order ONLY. No cash or plastic. Cheque or money order should be made out to “City of Edmonton”.
The certificate will be mailed to you, usually within a week.

Caren and Skip Kerr hosted a great many members and guests in their home at Oktober Fest last year. View photo album from last year's fest.
This year they are graciously opening their door and their hearts again in hosting a Hawaiian Feast with all the trimmings provided.
The date is Saturday, August 13, 2016 from 4:00 pm (1600) till 9:00 pm (2100).
