The Rev. Dr. Mouzon Biggs, Jr. has been senior minister at Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, an iconic edifice located immediately south of downtown Tulsa, since August 1980. During his tenure, the church has added more than 8,000 new members. Its endowment has grown from $200,000 to $26 million, and his weekly Sunday television broadcast at 11 a.m. on Tulsa’s ABC-affiliate is the most watched program in its time slot.  This native Texan is a graduate of Centenary College of Louisiana and he holds a Master of Theology degree from Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University; a Doctor of Divinity from Texas Wesleyan University; and a Doctor of Humane Letters from Oklahoma City University.  Dr. Biggs spoke recently at Presidents Elect Training (PETS) in Dallas and DGN Rhonda Herrington was inspired by his speech and purchased a copy to share with the club.

Palestine High School Teacher Karen Buckland presented our weekly program about her trip to Walden Pond.  She presented a paper last year at the 73rd Gathering of Thoreau Society in Concord Massachusetts.
Walden (1854) is probably the most famous writing of American author and transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau. The full title of the work is, Walden; or, Life in the Woods and it is also known under the title Walden Pond.
The book is often characterized as the result of Thoreau's attempt to 'live life simply.' The following is probably the most often quoted excerpt (it is from the second chapter):
"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion."

Lucy (Sharon Grizzle) and Ethel (Carol Herrington) put some pizazz into announcing our Rotary Club Fundraiser at the Membership/Foundation meeting on Sept. 20th. Orders will be taken for three varieties of World Famous Eilenberger Bakery cakes.  Eilenberger Bakery has been in Palestine Texas for 116 years.  Delicious Australian Apricot, Texas Pecan and Fruit Cake are available for purchase and 25% of the sale will be donated to the club!  What a great way to say Happy Holidays to your customers and friends.  For questions or order forms contact Sharon Grizzle at 903-731-3788.
