CAMP ENTERPRISE

Camp Enterprise was a traditional project of the Rotary Club of Beaumont for many years.  It was an intensive three-day seminar on business issues for high school juniors.  Each year, approximately 75 area students interacted with business executives, elected officials and government representatives.  Participating young men and women explored the fundamental challenges, opportunities and obligations of the American free enterprise system.

Students were immersed in a stimulating give-and-take environment – listening to presentations from business experts, questioning presenters, organizing their own business plans in small group teams and simulating operations of the created business.

Camp Enterprise attracted guest speakers such as bank presidents, executive officers of area corporations, media professionals, partners in law, accounting and financial firms, newspaper editors, state and local elected officials, educators and owners of grass roots businesses in the Beaumont metropolitan area.  Session topics included business ethics and values, career choices, impact of technology, business plans, advertising and marketing strategies, business start-ups, computer simulations and leadership skills training.  Students were exposed to the free enterprise system and specific careers on a personal level during field trips to local businesses of members of the Rotary Club of Beaumont.  Tours of business locations offered opportunities for delegates to observe first-hand how a business operates.

Students were presented with differing opinions on a variety of issues.  Students were not told what is “right” or “wrong.”  Guest speakers, panelists and facilitators, in fact, represented a wide cross-section of views on topic discussions.  After analyzing an issue, the students were expected to formulate their own opinions.  Camp Enterprise offered students an opportunity comparable to Boys and Girls State, Presidential classrooms and future problem solving workshops.
