Thirty-five Rotarians and friends had a truly great evening, learning about the Big Thicket preserve, the Neches River and its eco-system, and the educational programs offered through school programs. The evening could not have had better weather or been more fun!
Thank you to Rob Glassey for arranging, and to Becky and Chuck Mason for underwriting the excursion and helping to arrange for food and refreshments. Thank you to Sharen Kirksey for sharing the photos on Facebook. We will post more on the website when they become available. Come back and see!
A warm standing ovation welcomed the newest Rotarians in the Rotary Club of Beaumont on Wednesday, October 22. Shown here on the far left is Dana Timaeus and on the right, James "Jim" Henges. President Vernon Pierce is delighted to be surrounded by attorneys and new members!
The wait is over: You’ve been chompin’ at the bit to tell us what service projects we should do as a club, and this is your chance! Submittal forms will be available by this Wednesday. All project proposals will require an endorsement from a member of our club who will serve as an advocate for the project, clarify information and ensure that the project aligns with the club’s service project criteria.
We will rely on you to get this information out to the organizations you support.
Two types of projects can be submitted: Short-term service projects (anticipated budget from $0 - $500 that can be accomplished in a limited number of work days) and Community Improvement Projects (budget from $25,000 to $50,000 that can be accomplished within a Rotary year). The committee anticipates selecting four short-term projects (to be performed one per quarter during 2015) plus a Community Improvement Project beginning in Fall 2015 with completion by Spring 2016. Fundraising for this project would begin upon selection.
Criteria for the projects:

We seek projects that our members will want to support through monetary donations and/or volunteer time as well as projects that will promote the visibility of the club and its mission.
The selection process:
Proposals are due in the Rotary office by close of business November 14, 2014.
Finalists will be selected by the end of December, 2014.
Club members will have an opportunity to provide input on the types of projects they would like to support with their money and/or time.
The committee will present a recommendation to the Board at its January 2015 meeting for both short-term service projects and a Community Improvement Project.
Ready to get started? Proposal forms are available at Rotary meetings each week, from the Rotary office, and on the club website.
George ‘Tic’ Price is the new head basketball coach at Lamar. Previously, Tic has coached at the University of New Orleans, The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Memphis, McNeese State and Old Dominion. Tic grew up in the projects in Danville, VA and as a child, a neighbor forced him in to playing athletics. Basketball was the sport that stuck. Since then, Tic has coached 32 seasons at the collegiate level.
Since coming to Lamar, the average GPA for the basketball team has gone from below 2.0 to a 3.0. He is dedicated to the player’s success – both on and off the court. His coaching philosophy is: Don’t quit when you get tired, you quit after the other team is tired. He is working hard to instill a new culture at Lamar through hard work and discipline. If students aren’t at practice on time or do not have school work complete, he has instilled the 6X6 method. This is where a student runs 6 miles before 6 a.m. New marketing concepts coming to Lamar will include ‘Insane at the Montagne.’
Coach Price has developed a program at Lamar that teaches the players interviewing skills and digital ethics for Facebook, Twitter, etc.
Although Tic works hard to coach young players, he stated that coaches get too much blame and too much credit. Coaches are only as good as their teams that they recruited. He stated that it was fortunate for doctors that their records aren’t written in the papers – Dr. Jones has a 10 and 10 record this year: 10 wins and 10 losses.
Coach Tic Price was a good speaker and told humorous stories. It looks like he will turn around the basketball program at Lamar University.
