Stories
With President Miriam still convalescing, John Campbell took the role of Acting President. Richard Jarrett filed the President's column this week.

Upcoming meetings
The next 2 meetings (September 17, 24) will be held at the Royal Coach Hotel, 24 Dequetteville Terrace, Kent Town.  This week will be a Planning Meeting. Join us there at 7 for 7:15am for breakfast.
The meeting on 1 October will be at the Naval Military and Air Force Club and will celebrate Hat Day, a fundraising event for Rotary's Mental Health programs.  This will be a joint meeting with Rotary Club of Adelaide South.

Last week's meeting
Last week's speaker was Gary Locke of the Hutt Street Precinct Association.  Gary runs the Adelaide Travellers' Inn, a backpackers hostel in Hutt Street.  He moved it from Carrington Street about 10 years ago.  Initially, there was some concern from local traders, but they now appreciate the backpackers' presence - many of them work in the local bars and cafes and some do odd jobs locally in the community.  There was discussion about how we might better liaise with the Association.  Rob McLennan recalled that there was a joint project some years ago when he was President.  Gary suggested that one way would be to apply for community/arts grants to fund joint projects.  We could also become "Friends" of the Association for $50 a year.

In other news
  • Deb Wotherspoon reported on the recent visit of Yuya Sugano, our former Ambassadorial Scholar, who spent a week here on his way to a new job at Harvard University.
  • Yvette Reade read out an email from Bruce McDonald, in the middle of a trip to Europe.  Bruce and Heather are now in Norway with son Lachlan and his family.
  • David Rowe spoke about the importance of maintaining the "Bread Run", where we collect surplus bread from Bakers' Delight at North Adelaide each Sunday evening and deliver it to the Moore Street Centre and Ronald McDonald House.
  • Julie Campbell introduced Victor Riemma, who is a final year medical student here on a scholarship from Brazil, studying at the University of Adelaide.  Victor's father is Orvile Riemma, Past District Governor of District 4600 in Brazil.  Victor is looking for help to establish medical links and work with indigenous communities.  Victor is shown receiving one of our club banners from President-for-the-day John Campbell.

The Haircut

A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car.

His father said he'd make a deal with his son: 'You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible, and get your hair cut. Then we'll talk about the car.'

The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he'd settle for the offer, and they agreed on it.

After about six weeks his father said, 'Son, you've brought your grades up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm disappointed you haven't had your hair cut.

The boy said, 'You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair ~ and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair.

You're going to love the Dad's reply:............................

"Did you also notice that they all walked everywhere?"
