As you’d have seen from my 3 December members email, this Thursday’s breakfast meeting has a special focus on refugee mentoring for 2023. Our Christmas tree sales began last weekend despite the hot weather and noisy car race. Rob and Di set a good sales pace Saturday morning, shifting half the weekend’s 25 trees sold. Bruce, Richard, Liz, Feisar and Yvette finished it off with valuable help from ‘Friends’ Vanessa and Paul. We’re fortunate Rob is such a consummate retailer, balancing risk and reward. History suggests the coming weekend will be our biggest, sales-wise. Many thanks to all our rostered helpers for the fortnight ahead.
Our Club’s latest wine deal has sold well (69% of the Chalk Hill shiraz is sold) but do keep it up. We can now also offer Mitchell’s popular Watervale riesling in its 2018 Alcatraz label - we’ve pre-sold 24% of that 46 case pallet. It tested extremely well among 6 tasters last Friday. Both wines are excellent summer choices so tell your friends and help sell them. Chalk Hill McLaren Value shiraz is $150 a case (43% less than @ Irish Dan’s) and the riesling is just $120/case (44% less). Order some here!

As you can see Buddy a 3yr old Cavoodle (75% Cavalier) and Benni the 4yr old Cocker Spaniel are two beautiful female dogs who sadly need to be re-homed, as their owner has gone into a nursing home. They are both desexed, microchipped and fully vaccinated with sweet natures and fully house trained, but have not been well socialised so can be barky when out on walks. Ideally a home together would be best, however consideration to separate homes will be given.
There is no money expected to adopt Buddy and Benni, just someone who is willing to give them a loving home and a good life.

We are sponsoring a student, Sophia Lewis, for NYSF in January 2023. Sophia is just completing Year 11 at Botanic High and is jointly sponsored by our club and the Rotary Club of Unley.
NYSF stands for the National Youth Science Forum and its traditional format for the last 30 years or so has been a two-week residential program, initially in Canberra but more recently extended to include Brisbane and Perth, where attendees attend lectures, laboratories, and all sorts of site visits related to science and technology. There are also sessions where they learn about making presentations, preparing CVs, undertaking interviews etc.
With the advent of Covid, all this changed. The program is now run separately in each capital city over two weeks in January. Around 600-700 students attend, with about 40 of those in Adelaide. Students sign up for online "zoom" sessions where they can listen to talks and have discussions, but this is supplemented by local activities - visits, social events, etc.One of the great rewards of the program is the connections students make with other like-minded students interested in STEM subjects.
On Sunday, I attended a briefing/introduction for all the students who are attending NYSF next year, together with their families and mentors, at Charles Campbell College. It was an opportunity for the students to start getting to know each other, and each student had to introduce themselves, saying where they were from, who was sponsoring them and what they were thinking about doing post-school. The program was run by NYSF "staffers" - former NYSF attendees who come back in subsequent years to help run the program. Next year, after the program, we will get Sophia to come along to a meeting to tell us about her experience.
After the amazing success of our Rotary Clubs Riesling offered earlier this year, we have secured a local red wine for you to consider, enabling you to stock up for Christmas.
McLaren Vale is renowned for its excellent shiraz and this Chalk Hill Shiraz represents wonderful value, normally $22 per bottle, our club's fundraising offer is just $150.00 for a dozen. ($12.50 a bottle)
This delicious, easily drinkable wine is clean and smooth without unpleasant tannin aftertaste, so it's rapidly becoming a favoured wine.
