Last Thursday's breakfast meeting at the Mercure/Grosvenor turned out to be our final meeting there as they have decided to close down their kitchen and concentrate on just accommodation, which came as a great surprise.
So, I am busily investigating a new location for our twice monthly breakfast meetings and as we are a city club attempting to remain within the city limits and I welcome any suggestions.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 11th. February and Margie Steffen has arranged for us to visit the Community Dental Establishment followed by a breakfast in the cafe underneath, more details to follow.
Our guest speaker was John and Julie Campbell's son in law, Steven Dent who spoke on a new cricket marketing initiative in England and Wales, 100 which was fascinating, particularly as Steve is now located in Adelaide and continuing to work on the project which involves very odd hours.
Our fundraising took a dramatic rise in December, adding over $8,000 to our bottom line thanks to the Bunnings BBQ, Grange Raffle, Xmas Trees and Xmas Cakes. In addition, we continue to collect bottles and cans and have currently raised $509.
At our board meeting on Thursday, it was agreed to donate $500 supporting the Neil Sachse Centre's Project Discovery Classic Bike Ride. The late Neil Sachse was a member of the Rotary Club of Adelaide Parks and our donation will support a rider, Michael Kat whom Parks are sponsoring. The money goes to spinal cord injury research.
We have written to Bunnings at Mile End requesting more barbeques for 2021 and yesterday they confirmed our request, so fingers crossed we can continue to build on our fundraising efforts.
Katey Halliday has been in touch with Amy at Catherine House for an update and in consultation with Kym Pedler have decided not to proceed until the end of March to avoid any hot weather before planting. At present only one unit is ready with the other four still waiting for concreting work to be completed. Once this is finished, we will organize weeding the properties again and laying the irrigation system before planting
The Rotary International Zone 8 History and Archives Committee is nearing completion of a 400 plus page, hard covered book to mark the Centenary of Rotary in Australia on April 21, 2021. Titled Humanity in Action, it celebrates 100 years of Rotary Clubs in Australia and our near island neighbours.
Please note that advance orders are now being received. Cost is $25 plus postage.
AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT: ORDER YOUR COPY OF NOW - The high cost of preparation and printing limits the size of the print run to 3,000 at this time and, after District commitments are fulfilled, remaining books will be sold on a ‘first in’ basis for $25 (plus postage) each, including GST.
Given the postage costs of pre-orders, it is suggested Clubs add to the delivery of their promised complimentary copy any additional orders including club members. Presentation of a copy of this valuable historical record to local libraries will present an excellent promotional opportunity with local media in Rotary’s Centenary Year. Books will be sent following the official book launch by the Governor General, David Hurley on April 8, 2021.
