Fantastic news, last night (Monday) Erfan learned that his brother’s family of eight have now received their visas to enter Australia. This giant hurdle was crossed with Erfan and his family’s hard work to get their family to safety and through the correct government processing to eventually attain their visas. More effort is needed to work out the next steps to get the family on a plane to Australia!
It was with pleasure that last week we welcomed District Governor Craig Dowling and Area Governor Angela Ellis to our Club meeting. In a very relaxed atmosphere, DG Craig talked about his areas of interest such as “Rotary Says No to Domestic Violence”, the Loxton Conference and the DG’s Partner’s Project – then we had open discussions about a number of other topics. A great meeting.
Saturday’s authentic Mexican Cooking Class was a real hoot! So much fun, laughter and conversation around the kitchen while Priscilla, Blanco and Lili cooked up a storm! With 17 Rotarians, Rotaractors and friends attending, it was a great afternoon. We learnt about Mole (sauces), such as one jar of “Negro” being a Mexican-favourite chocolate/chilli/nut combo to a freshly blitzed, mouth-watering green jalapeno (blackened on the grill), whole green tomatillos (tomatoes) and onion mole. Each course was delightful and delicious consisting of the main meal (enchiladas with beef or chicken, your choice of mole, onion, sour cream, and feta cheese) to soft, moist Cornbread Cake and a refreshing horchata drink made from ground rice, cinnamon, evaporated and condensed milk, and lots of ice. Our thanks to hosts Carol and Brian who graciously offered their home for the cooking class, and to Lili, Carol and Elaine for organising this great social event. The $60 profit made will go towards Erfan’s brother’s expenses.
A very successful BBQ at Bunnings Mile End was held on Monday this week with profits just over $800. Thanks to Di, Don, Bruce, Paul E, Elaine, Yvette, John W, Fred, Liz, Angus, Lili and Graham for your shifts.
Don’t forget to gather your friends and family together for our Rotary/Rotaract Quiz Night for Timor Leste. Secure your tickets through Humanitix (click HERE) for the event to be held on Friday 29 September, 6pm-10pm at Wyatt Hall, Pulteney Grammar School, 190 South Terrace, Adelaide. It promises to be a great night with fun, laughter, a wine wall, a raffle, and great prizes that are being accumulated by enthusiastic Community Service members Margie and Paige! Tickets are $20 each. As the Quiz Night is scheduled for the night before the Footy Grand Final, dress up with a sport’s team theme and win a special prize for the best-dressed group. All funds will go towards school or water projects in remote villages in Timor Leste.

Tell me more: The quiz night will feature the usual favourites; a wine wall, games, Emmanuel as MC, and a raffle. There will be a special prize for the best-dressed table/group. Considering it is the grand final weekend the theme is 'a sport or sports team'. There is something for everyone, you don't have to answer questions to win a prize!
BYO food and drink/alcohol (we will have a tea and coffee station for gold coin donation). We will have card facilities on the night, however, please bring along some gold coins if possible to make the games run more smoothly.
How can you help: Apart from buying tickets, we would be very grateful for donations of wine to add to our wine wall. These will be wrapped up to keep the label a surprise and people will pay for a lucky dip-style chance at a bottle. In the past, this has been a very lucrative sideshow, so rest assured your donation will be impactful. We would also be grateful for donations suitable for a raffle. We had a lovely and entertaining afternoon during the Mexican cooking class, in case you missed it. Everything was authentic and traditional, and so simple to make at home using ingredients that can be found in a Latin store, online, or at the supermarket. We had mole chicken enchiladas and green salsa beef enchiladas, cornbread cake, and fresh horchata for drinking.
I'd like to thank Carol and Brian for opening their home and doing a lot of work, Elaine for the logistics, and my lovely friends Priscila and Blanca for sharing their knowledge and stories and making this experience very personal and cosy.
Priscila sent us a message: “Thank you for receiving us, it was a pleasure showing you a little of our culture. I’m glad to know everyone enjoyed the food and had a good time on Saturday. It´d be nice to know if someone tried to cook something”. Now you know… please share if you do!
