This has been a very busy few weeks for our members what with BBQs and Christmas Tree selling responsibilities all of which have added to our fundraising account which allows us to nominate projects to assist those vulnerable and disadvantaged communities both locally and abroad and to enhance our brand to the world. Congratulations to the Fundraising Team for bringing together these great avenues of fundraising.
I remember when, as District Governor, I addressed the National Youth Science Forum students at their briefing weekend I commented that it is very easy to say “I know what Rotarians do – they cook BBQs”, but I asked them to look beyond the BBQs to see what wonderful work Rotary does, and much of that is because many people are willing to get out in the communities and fund raise, and part of that fundraising provided the funds to finance their science journey.” I am looking forward to the new projects that we will be able to underwrite because of the renewed enthusiasm within our Club.
Christmas is fast approaching and on Sunday we held our Christmas Brunch (Meeting # 1496) at the Adelaide Bowling Club. Congratulations to our Club Administration Team Leader – Julie for bringing this event to life and for the generosity of members who made the day a financial success.
As we approach this Festive Season, let us reflect on Rotary’s and our own achievements this year.
Let us be grateful of where we live, of our Friends and Families.
It is a time to also spare thoughts for those less fortunate than us, in places close and far and for the many people who will have a lonely Christmas, those who have lost family members throughout this year and face a particularly sad time.
Let us also wish for a speedy and full recovery for President Miriam and for her to rejoin us again in January.
Beautiful weather set the scene for a casual brunch under the pavilions at Adelaide Bowling Club last Sunday. It was great to catch up with Rotarians and partners and share best wishes for the festive season. David Rowe was resplendent in a Christmas tie and shorts while Julie and Barbara wore festive headpieces.
Xmas hamper raffle donated by Di Lane was won by David Rowe who donated it to the club for auction. Rob duly auctioned said hamper with the highest bidder being John Campbell. Total monies raised $197. Many thanks to Di Lane.
Dr PHIL led the carol singing with a ukulele accompaniment and Kirsti, Terry and Dean showed us their bowling skills.
Lucky number winners were Barb Wheatcroft, Yvette, Ange and Terry.
We enjoyed breakfast and the opportunity to spend time chatting with one another.
Please note that the 2015 Rotary Roundtable has been deferred due to unforeseebale circumstances until 20 February 2016.
2. Donations for the victims of the Pinery Bushfires – DG Doug Layng says there are many ways in which Rotarians can assist. Volunteering your services to repair fences, sheds, etc., and financial assistance with tax deductible donations. Here are two suggestions.
You can donate funds through the District 9500 Disaster Recovery Fund, through the District Treasurer- A form to do this is in the District Dispatch. The committee will liaise with the local Clubs and the State Recovery Committee to allocate the available funds to recovery and mitigation projects. Your contact is Trevor King Chair Disaster Recovery Committee. Ph:0420-651-419
You can also donate through the ROTARY AUSTRALIA BENEVOLENT SOCIETY (RABS).
The sum you consider raising does not need to be large, there is no upper or lower limit. Perhaps some person you know has a shortfall between insurance cover and replacement costs, be it a car or tractor or clothing or other property. They may need funds for Counselling. They may have injuries or health problems. There are many things that victims struggle with financially following a disaster and your club can achieve public funding (tax deductible) through calling on your community to assist.
The community of Kapunda is putting together a bushfire benefit concert to be held on the 19th December and which our Rotary Club is supporting, along with the Kapunda Business Alliance, Kapunda Harness Racing Club, Kapunda Rotary and Kapunda Lions.

Rotary Club of Adelaide Light Mission Statement
To be recognised as the Service Club of Choice in the Eastern Precinct of Adelaide because we are a Friendly Breakfast Club that appeals to a broad range of busy people who want to make a difference to local and international communities.
One day a father, on his way home from work suddenly remembers that it's his daughter's birthday. He stops at a toy store and goes in and asks the sales person, 'How much for one of those Barbies in the display window?'
The salesperson answers, 'Which one do you mean, Sir? We have: Work Out Barbie for $19.95, Shopping Barbie for $19.95, Beach Barbie for $19.95, Disco Barbie for $19.95, Astronaut Barbie for $19.95, Skater Barbie for $19.95, and Divorced Barbie for $265.95'.
The amazed father asks: 'It's what? Why is the Divorced Barbie $265.95 and the others only $19.95?'
The slightly miffed salesgirl rolls her eyes, sighs, and answers, 'Sir..., Divorced Barbie comes with: Ken's Truck, Ken's House, Ken's Fishing Boat, Ken's Furniture, Ken’s Dog, Ken's Computer and one of Ken's Friends.
