Stories

With President Miriam still convalescing, John Wotherspoon took the role of Acting President. Richard Jarrett filed the President's column this week.

This week's meeting

Our next 3 meetings (September 3, 10, 17) will be held at the Royal Coach Hotel, 24 Dequetteville Terrace, Kent Town.  At our next Planning Meeting on September 17th the club will discuss the success of this move. Join us there at 7 for 7:15am for breakfast. Our guest speaker this week is Bashar Baghdadi:
"What's going on in the Middle East - an update"
Bashar spoke to our club in October 2014 about the difficulties of life in this troubled area of our world - something of which he has first-hand experience.  Given the ever-changing situation, it is time to hear from him again.

A message from President Miriam

"As the physicians have said, I represent the 1% of people that things don't go according to plan!!!  Good thing that I have age on my side….  And, I'm very thankful that they let me come home, not sure that I could have coped with another 2 weeks in hospital.  I see the surgeon on Thursday afternoon so he will let me know when I'm able to fly (though perhaps not until mid-Sept).  As soon as I have details, I will let you know.  Please let the club know that I'm thinking of you all and looking forward to seeing everyone again soon.  Thanks to you and the others for your kindness in looking after everything until I get back.  Greatly appreciated.
Miriam"

Last week's meeting

The meeting last week was a Planning Meeting at which we discussed a number of issues, including membership and community service.  Deb Wotherspoon has provided a short report on Community Service (see below), and John Campbell will be contacting people directly about our membership strategy.  John Wotherspoon showed a short video about membership with the following messages.  Three reasons why people might not join Rotary were:
  1. They don’t know much about Rotary – is it just old guys meeting over bad food?
  2. They haven’t been asked - oops
  3. They don’t have much time
The issue of "time" of course, is one of priority and it is certainly true that in this busy world, young people in particular are not interested in just sitting having a meal at a Rotary meeting - but they are prepared to volunteer and have community involvement. So, the best introduction to Rotary may be some kind of volunteer opportunity.  This is much less confronting than “do you want to join Rotary?”

The Good Guys BBQ is progressing well.  There have, however, been a few developments.
  1. The Good Guys are keen to make the BBQ available to other organisations as well, so we have negotiated with them that the 1st weekend of the month will be available for other organisations
  2. Our Club gets the rest
  3. We have agreed with them for the dates for the next 3 months, so  the dates we are NOT THERE are
    1. 5/9 & 6/9 (includes Fathers Day)
    2. 3/10 & 4/10
    3. 7/11 & 8/11
The online roster will be amended to reflect these changes.
After a false start (apologies!), we are now on Facebook as a Community Page - Rotary Adelaide Light - just go to the website https://www.facebook.com/rotaryadelaidelight
You will be able to see the latest posts, but to do any more than that, you will need to have a Facebook account and login properly to Facebook.  Then you can "like" the page.  Once you have done that, any posts to Rotary Adelaide Light will automatically come up in your Facebook feed.
I have had a few suggestions put to me regarding projects for this coming year for Community Service.
Following Di Lane's suggestion that it would be a good idea to become involved in Youth Opportunities, I contacted Peter Carey and below is his response.

"Thanks for your feedback Deborah, and thanks very much for your offer for assistance. I will keep it in mind and certainly let you know if we can use your help.
I have attached an invitation to our upcoming graduation ceremonies and they are a great example of what our program achieves.
If anyone is interested, please let me know who and what ceremony they are attending.
Regards, Peter Carey."

The graduation ceremonies are as follows:
  • Murray Bridge High School, Thursday 24th September at 3:30pm, School Drama Space, Murray Bridge High School Campus, Lohmann St, Murray Bridge.
  • Craigmore High School, Thursday 24th September at 3pm, School Library, Craigmore High School Campus, 2 Jamieson Rd, Blakeview
If anyone is interested in attending either of these graduations, please let me (Deborah) know and I will forward the information on to Peter.
I have also contacted Miriam about possible connections with Catherine House and DeafCanDo and following is her response.
"Yes, Catherine House are keen to do something with us. They have just changed CEO and will meet with us in a few months to figure out how we can help in a practical way. I will make contact with DeafCanDo and see if we can get them to meet with you (or come to a meeting) to talk about their projects, etc.
Kind regards, Miriam."

We are looking for a holiday house at Victor Harbour/Port Elliot/Middleton/Goolwa

If you have anything available, please contact
Deborah Wotherspoon on 0408 876 432 or at waddy@adam.com.au

Thank you. Deborah Wotherspoon

Rotary Club of Adelaide Light Mission Statement

To be recognised as the Service Club of Choice in the Eastern Precinct of Adelaide because we are a Friendly Breakfast Club that appeals to a broad range of busy people who want to make a difference to local and international communities.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2015 when...

1... You accidentally enter your PIN on the microwave.

2... You haven't played Solitaire with real cards in years.

3... You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of three..

4... You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.

5... Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don't have e-mail addresses.

6... You pull up in your own driveway and use your mobile phone, to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries...

7... Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen

8... Leaving the house without your mobile phone, which you didn't even have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic, and you turn around to go and get it

9. You get up in the morning and go on line, before getting your coffee

10. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : )
