We’re all thankful SA’s COVID outbreak was contained again as we quietly consumed some books, tidied pantries/sock drawers, walked dogs, binged Olympics/Netflix/iView, etc. Being an ‘essential service, ’Fred’s Van continued during lockdown. So last Wednesday night AdLight Friend Paige joined Kirsti, Rob and me as first time Fred’s Van-ners, gently coached by 3 experienced ‘Vinnie Vanners’.
Here’s how it works… we prepared 50+ meals in Vinnies' Hawthorn kitchen (sambos, bananas, BBQ snags, pasties, hot pasta) and packed them in the van with tanks of hot/cold drinks and winter warmers. Then we drove ‘Fred’ in to Gawler Place where a small crowd of hungry customers were waiting at the agreed time (Fred’s Van comes every night). Homeless or tenuously-accommodated folk politely queued and filed by for a warm, welcome meal and drink (with copious sugar) and a chance to chat. Some snapped up surplus seconds and one indigenous bloke beamed happily as he strode forth into the 4C night, grateful for his huge, newly-acquired blanket… be thankful we avoid this experience.
For those from Bob Buckerfield’s era, after 3 heart attacks on his 84th birthday he’s spent 2 weeks in Flinders Hospital. His open-heart bypass surgery was successful but being diabetic, he’s had blood clot complications in his legs where they took the veins. Bob can’t have visitors but Barry Grear’s brought some cheer over many long phone conversations. We’ve a personalised card to send to Bob, which you could sign at Thursday’s Coffee Conversation.
After a week as Lone Rangers we must keep our masks but still socially distance. Our next meeting is a dinner on Thursday August 12th so watch this space and we’ll soon resolve a suitable venue for it. Meanwhile if you’ve weekday flexibility, there’s a ‘Coffee Conversation’ 9:30am this Thursday 29th. It’ll be sunny but socially distanced, so bring a mask for take away coffee from 'Tell Henry Café', 52 The Parade… then we can chat in the sun over the road at Norwood Oval Rotunda.
In last minute locking down last week, I neglected to mention that Andries and Christine have resigned but they do want to stay connected as Friends of Adelaide Light. We’re disappointed but understand their time for fulsome membership was limited, so we hope to keep in touch as AdLight Friends.
Thanks to those of you who offered your help with the now COVID-cancelled Bunnings BBQ this Saturday 31st. Post lockdown, our 1st August Steam Train ride might run after all, or may be postponed till perhaps Sunday 22nd due to COVID spacing constraints. We’ll let everyone know ASAP once we can confirm what’s happening. Till then, stay COVID safe.
