Last Thursday’s Cuppa Conversations at the White Picket Café was entertaining and relaxing. As is usual in the cold winter months of Australia, some of our members travel to warmer climates up north or even further to the Northern Hemisphere! On the day, we were able to farewell Dean for his trip with Pam to the USA – I think he said it was their 9th trip to the US to visit friends and see the attractions of States not previously explored. It was lovely that Graham Smith attended and thanked the Club for the flowers we sent; for those who can attend, his wife Margaret’s funeral will be held this Wednesday 26 July at 2.00pm at the Henley-Fulham Uniting Church, Fulham Gardens.
Our wanderer, John Wotherspoon, has now traversed from Italy to France and sent new photos of his walks in the Ardeche (Haute Loire region) at the headwaters of the Loire Valley – a very beautiful part of France. His trek that day encompassed a 7.5 hour walk with a 30 minute break for a picnic lunch; it’s lucky that John had four years of (rusty) high school French up his sleeve, as the other trekkers are all French with limited English.
The rest of the past week has been taken up with our Service Directors holding evening meetings with their teams to put together their project Budgets for the year.
Our fundraiser film “Oppenheimer” certainly packed a punch! It was lovely to see 36 members, partners and Friends of Rotary attend the event at the Piccadilly Theatre. Eight members who couldn’t attend donated their $35 each to the fundraiser which will be used to further assist Afghan refugees. Thanks to Rob, Carol and Liz for organising the event which raised $690 profit.
Another very successful Cuppa Conversations organised by Lili was held last Saturday at Boccelli Caffé Ristorante in Hutt Street, with 15 migrants and eight Rotarians attending. Conversations were running thick and fast with everyone enjoying each other’s company. We had chats with people from Colombia, Taiwan, Brazil and Mexico. Lili had Rotarians move every 20 minutes or so that we could meet as many visitors as possible, and it worked very well.
This Saturday (29 July), don’t forget to attend our Club’s tree planting from 9.30am-12 noon at the Adelaide City Council’s Carbon Offset Demonstration site in Park 4, North Adelaide. Parking available on LeFevre Rd and Baron Terrace. Gloves and gear will be provided, just bring a hat, drinking water/snacks and weather gear, if needed.
Our Mexican Cooking class – taught by friends Priscilla and Bianca - to be held on Saturday 12 August at 1.00pm has been popular but there are still a few spots left, so book in quickly. Bookings are essential through Carol and the class is limited to 17 people. Click here to email Carol of your acceptance, and she’ll email you her address. Cost is $20pp to cover the cost of ingredients. Any funds raised will be given to assist Erfan’s brother and family when they arrive in Adelaide.
This coming Thursday, our meeting is at the Kent Town Hotel at 6.00 for 6.15pm start. Our speaker will be Sue Crees who will be speaking about the International Year of Glass – Stained Glass Windows and the very large collection of William Morris windows in Adelaide. These exceptionally beautiful windows have a wonderful back story, so don’t miss the opportunity to see the photos and hear about their history and conservation.
I’m in an area of France that's the headwaters of the Loire River. It’s called the Ardèche and lies immediately above the Haute Loire region. The village where my hotel's situated (Les Estables) is the highest of all the towns in France’s Central Massif. We're above the snow line but below the tree line, so there are plenty of forests. There's ample cropping for hay on the land nearby but forests lie a short distance away with bushland quite unlike Australia’s. The attached photos help bring it to life. We did 7.5 hours of walking today with 30 minutes for a picnic lunch (I’ll sleep well).
It’s quite a different group of 22 walkers here. Mostly 50+ but all French, only a few of whom have any English and I just have 4 years of thoroughly rusty high school French… but we're managing. It was booked through a well know division of an international walking holiday company that began as Australian Himalayan Expeditions and was renamed World Expeditions in the late 80s (no mention was made of the language requirement). That said, it’s fine and I can tell you more on my return.
We had a delightful gathering at Cuppa Conversation last Saturday 22nd July in Bocelli Caffe. I’m sharing some pictures with you for the next newsletter.
The next Cuppa Conversation will be on 19 August 2023 at 10am.
I am still looking for a location that would work. If anyone has a recommendation, I would be grateful and would look into it.
I want to involve the attendees in our projects, so if anyone has any activities to share or a need for volunteers, please let me know so that I can post it in the WhatsApp chat.
Thanks!
Lili
Please let Lili know if you are able to attend the next Cuppa Conversation.
