Stories
President's Pen
Hi, Rotarians and Friends.

At last Thursday’s dinner meeting we heard from Catherine House Client Services Manager, Dierdre Flynn.  There are many stories behind each Catherine House client but essentially, they mostly involve domestic violence and largely at the hands of men.  You can find tips on the best way we can help here at ‘White Ribbon’… and for the men reading this, you can help best by reading this webpage.  So, let’s all do our bit to change things - moving mountains starts with small stones.

Next Monday, please join me, Katey, Paige and others at Adelaide City Rotaract’s meeting, 6pm 8 May at the Astor Hotel.  Support their club while enjoying a good value meal to hear two speakers with the tools to ensure you’re well informed about the ‘Voice’ referendum.  Drawing on consultation with constitutional lawyers, it’s well worth hearing wherever you currently stand on this question.

If you’ve not yet experienced our 7:15-8:30 breakfast meetings at South Tce. Croquet Club (2nd Thursday of the month), do come along.  You can easily leave early if you need, before it finishes.  They are great meetings with excellent discussion, seated around a large table.  The next one on Thursday 11 May will break into service areas (Community, Youth, International, etc.) to hear member views and set future direction.  It’s a chance for you to really make a difference and still leave when you must!

Our Club has agreed to sponsor indigenous student Anesha Rahman through her 6 year Bachelor of Medical Studies (Doctor of Medicine) at Adelaide University.  Anesha comes from Badimia country, over 270km north east of Perth where the wheat belt gives way to the open skies and rich red dirt of the outback.  Her Indigenous Health Scholarship pay Anesha $5,000 p.a. to help cope with some of her living costs while studying.  Once qualified, she plans to offer more culturally sensitive medical services to her Indigenous community.  Meanwhile, we’ll have occasional contact with Anesha over the next 6+ years for mutual benefit.

Don’t forget our District 9510 Rotary Volunteering Expo on 3rd June 2023 in Bonython Hall at Adelaide University. Its free and open to the public with 40 exhibitors and Guest speakers on societal change and volunteering trends. Its theme Proud of the Past Confident of the Futurehighlights the satisfying experiences for all Rotarians.

That night theres a Celebration Dinner 6:30pm at the National Wine Centre, $100 for a 2-course meal, welcome drink on arrival, entertainment and some very special guests. So, move quickly to put 3rd June in your diary… you can register for either/both here.

By the time you read this, Bruce will have returned from his family trip to Vietnam with stories about sailing in a Junk on Halong Bay, cycling in the rain and his ‘fish pedicure’ afterwards.  You can chat with him about all this at our next White Picket Coffee Conversation 9:30am this Thursday, or on Thursday 11 May at South Tce Croquet Club over breakfast.

See you soon,
John

The Four Way Test

The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

  1. Is it the Truth?
  2. Is it Fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build Goodwill and better Friendships?
  4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

Affirmation

United in the spirit of Service we value truth, fairness and friendship; and we welcome the opportunity that Rotary gives us to contribute our talents and resources in support of others.

Rotary Club of Adelaide Light Mission Statement

To have fun and engage interest from new members and friends as we use our strengths for a better world here and abroad - a welcoming, flexible group having fun doing hands-on activities for positive impact.

Jokes Corner
A lady owned several cats, and introduced them to me as follows:

"That’s Astrophe, that’s Erpillar, that’s Aract, that’s Alogue."

"Where on earth did you get such unusual names?" I asked.

"Oh, those are their last names," she explained. "Their first names are Cat."
