Our speaker last week was Rotarian Fred Field who regaled us anecdotes of his days as a bus driver in the Adelaide Hills in the 1970’s, which he used as both a means to get to work in the city in the morning and to fulfil his love of driving buses. He also recounted the history or many of the Adelaide Hills bus companies and stories of how these were run. Fred continued driving buses on a volunteer basis as opportunities arose and then joined the Sydney Bus Association and in 2016 he did a refresher course for heavy trucks and buses and began volunteering, originally as a conductor, on these older buses which are used on special occasions. He now volunteers each Australia Day, June Long Weekend and 1 other day a year and can be seen driving Leyland Double Decker Buses around Sydney.
It is always fascinating to find out what our Rotarians get up to in their spare time!
We thank Katrina for delivering our $280 donation to the Hutt St IGA. The Manager, Theo, will prepare a hamper, with items at cost price, and deliver it next week to the Moore St Centre.
Katrina also delivered our donation of numerous toys to the Salvation Army Community Centre in Pirie St. The toys were added to tables of toys that have been put out on display for parents of the needy children. The Salvation Army bring the parents to the centre where they can choose appropriate toys for their children.
This Thursday will be our last meeting for the year and it will be a festive occasion so please feel free to wear a “piece” of Christmas and we would love for any partners or friends to join us. We will commence meetings again on January 11th 2018.
Thank you to those Rotarians and Rotaractors who sold Xmas Trees last weekend. The last three weekends have been busy for our club and the contribution that each of you have made in giving up your time has certainly been of benefit to the club. It goes without saying that we value the skill and expertise and organisation that Rob has put into this project and he certainly deserves our thanks.
Our next activity again needs full support from all club members and that is our Film Night for the film “Breathe” on Friday 12th January 2018 at Palace Novas Cinema, off Rundle Street. We need each member to sell at least their ticket plus three others and then we will have a success on our hands. Please help.
