From the President's Pen
Dear Rotarians and Friends

Lovely to welcome back Sam Pons to our Rotary Meeting, Sam is back in Adelaide with his family however has been busy travelling weekly for work.  We look forward to seeing Sam back when he is able to join us for meetings in the future.

Our guest speakers were Bruce and Wallace and the topic was “Life with a Guide Dog”.  Wallace is Bruce’s second guide dog.  His first dog, Keeley is now retired and also lives with them.  Bruce pointed out that both guide dogs are different and both Wallace and Keeley get on well with each other.   It costs $30K to train a guide dog and the training for guide dogs is the same all over the world.  However there is no cost to the person that requires the guide dog and Bruce feels very privileged to have had 2 guide dogs.  An assessor from Guide Dogs Australia comes out to check on the guide dogs every 6 – 12 months.  Not every dog is successful in training though there is a 65% - 75% success rate.

Guide dogs help people to have a level of independence that they may not have without them.  There are wait lists involved with getting a guide dog as it is important to match the dog to the handler.  There are over 50 criteria used to match the dog to the handler.  The training is very important and relies on the expertise of the guide dog instructors.  The dog must be able to cope with whatever they come up against.

Guide Dogs Australia have also developed an Autism Assistance Dog program which helps families with children who have autism.  This allows families to get to social interactions with more enjoyment.  Whilst not every child with autism is suitable for an autism assistance dog, many who are cope much better with day to day activities with the dog in their lives.

We all enjoyed the talk very much thanks to Bruce and Wallace.

Just a reminder that there is no meeting this Thursday morning due to the film night.

See you all next week
Kind regards
Miriam

Jokes Corner
Elderly Couple

There was an elderly couple who in their old age noticed that they were getting a lot more forgetful, so they decided to go to the doctor. The doctor told them that they should start writing things down so they don't forget.

They went home and the old lady told her husband to get her a bowl of ice cream. "You might want to write it down," she said. The husband said, "No, I can remember that you want a bowl of ice cream."

She then told her husband she wanted a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream. "Write it down," she told him, and again he said, "No, no, I can remember: you want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream."

Then the old lady said she wants a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top. "Write it down," she told her husband and again he said, "No, I got it. You want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top."

So he goes to get the ice cream and spends an unusually long time in the kitchen, over 30 minutes. He comes out to his wife and hands her a plate of eggs and bacon. The old wife stares at the plate for a moment, then looks at her husband and asks, "Where's the toast."
