It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Margaret, the wife of our Hon Member PP Graham Smith last week. Our condolences to Graham’s and Margaret’s families. Graham joined Rotary in March 1988 with Tea Tree Gully Club before transferring to AdLight and was our President in 1996/97. He’d been married to Margaret for one week shy of 30 years! For the last few months, Graham has been coming to our Coffee Conversations at the White Picket Café. Unfortunately, just days after Margaret’s passing, Graham was travelling with “his rock” (Margaret’s daughter, Judith) when Judith suffered a stroke; she is now being treated in the RAH. Our thoughts are with Graham, Judith and families during this time.
Last week at the Croquet Club, we showed DG Craig Dowling’s first video communication that touched on RI, Regionalisation, DEI, “Rotary says No to Domestic Violence” project, and the Rotary Conference to be held on 15-17 March 2024 in Loxton (we’ll appoint a “Captain” to oversee this.) Discussions then ensued on the many subjects raised by DG Craig.
We were able to show our newly-produced Peace Pole organised by Heidi Unferdorben from the Rotary Club of Adelaide. The Peace Pole project is part of the Rotary Club of Adelaide’s Centenary Year celebrations with 100 Peace Poles being donated by Rotary Clubs to schools, child centres, or other appropriate venues. Our Club will organise a ceremony at the Clovelly Park Primary School – which Erfan’s sons attend - after discussion of dates with the School’s Assistant Principal. The 4-sided Pole depicts the phrase “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in four languages - English, Dari (Afghan Persian), Kaurna and Bahasa (Indonesian) as Clovelly Park Primary is part of a “Bridge Program” with a school in Jakarta.
We then held our Board Meeting and Director’s are putting together their Budgets so that we can apportion funds to various existing and new projects under consideration.

Don’t forget to volunteer for our Club’s tree planting with the Adelaide City Council on Saturday 29 July from 9.30am-12 noon at the Council’s Carbon Offset Demonstration site in Park 4, North Adelaide. (Check out Kirsti’s email of 12 July for a link to the image of the Park – a few hundred metres from the Caledonian Hotel. Parking available on LeFevre Rd and Baron Terrace. Gloves and gear will be provided, just bring hat, drinking water/snacks and weather gear, if needed. Also respond to Kirsti’s email to let her know that you’ll be coming, please.
If members are interested in Mexican food, place a date in your Diaries for a Mexican Cooking Class to be held on Saturday 12 August at 1.00pm. Bookings are essential through Carol (who is hosting the event at her home in North Adelaide) and the class is limited to 17 people. Click here to email Carol of your acceptance, and she’ll email you her address. Cost is $20pp to cover the cost of ingredients. The idea for a cooking class came about at one of our Cuppa Conversations between Carol, Lili and Elaine and they roped in friends Priscilla and Bianca who will be our cooks. Tastings afterwards. Any funds raised will be given to assist Erfan’s brother and family when they arrive in Adelaide from the Afghanistan area.
We've got our annual tree planting morning with the Adelaide City Council coming up on Saturday 29th July.
This will be from 9:30-12 at the Council's Carbon Offset Demonstration Site in Park 4, North Adelaide (see below). Please meet the team at the site in green on the map if you attend.
There is parking available along Barton Terrace and Lefevre Rd.
The council will start with a site induction and planting demonstration. They will supply gloves and tools but please BYO hat, wet weather gear (if looking rainy) and any drinks/snacks.
