Stories
President's Pen
Last Tuesday at the Cumby (Cumberland Hotel) a small group of our younger members together with John W and myself met once again focusing on Project Brainstorming which was very capably led by Katey which produced some excellent suggestions.
Katey brought along her neighbours, originally from Columbia, Alex Yepes and Maria Garces who immediately involved themselves in the discussion. Unfortunately, Stef and Raagini were apologies due to their work commitments.
I would like to invite everyone from our club who may be interested in this project to join us for a pub meal at our next evening meeting at the Cumby on Wed. 3rd. March at 6 pm. and I stress that there is no compulsion to attend.

Stef has just purchased a very attractive navy-blue polo shirt with our club logo for $43.00 and if you don't have one in your wardrobe, I encourage you to purchase one.

I was sad to hear of the passing of Rotarian Ken Dorrington, husband of former District Governor Marie and the funeral is on Monday 8th. February. Ken was a member of the Walkerville Club.

Our next meeting is this coming Thursday morning at the Community Dental Clinic, 72-79 Light Square, meeting from 7.15 am for a 7.30 am tour of the facility led by Margie Steffens. This will be followed by breakfast from 8am next door at the Little Mission Cafe in their atrium area.

Please respond to Di's email requesting that you RSVP to me and providing me with your menu selection by Monday 8/2/21.

Project Brainstorm activity summary
Through this activity, we first shared up to three causes each which we were passionate about and why. We grouped those which were similar into broad themes which were:
  • Children/youth
  • Caring for the environment
  • Animal rescue
  • Financial support for individuals internationally (ie. Towards small, sustainable business)
  • International service
  • Support for women
  • Migrant support
We each then had three votes for what we would most like to focus on first. The two with the most votes were children/youth and migrant support.
From here, we split into two groups and brainstormed ideas for each about what we could do as a group towards these causes. The groups came up with many ideas and narrowed them down to something achievable as a starting point.

Migrant support project
To support migrants/new arrivals in Adelaide with networking, social/emotional support, connection and English practice, we will coordinate a regular ‘coffee conversation’ meet up by identifying a suitable venue, date, and individuals to invite along.

What was discussed: Many potential ways we could support migrants in Adelaide such as mentoring, hosting tours of popular regions in SA, providing information on things such as public transport and medical centres, resilience workshops and English practice. Before embarking on anything further, the ‘coffee conversation’ project will allow us to start small and identify individuals who may like some support and consider what is most needed.
Project team: Katey, Maria, Christine, and John.
Next Steps: Project team to discuss potential date and venue for first meet up.

Children/youth project
  1. To support children (e.g., Orphans) to bring Christmas cheer we will provide gifts (shoe box) and decorations by assisting … and donating show boxes and decorating an orphanage/hospital ward.
  2. To support underprivileged school kids to set them up for success at school we will get backpacks together with school ‘gear’ by raising funds, engaging “backpacks for SA”.
  3. To support students (e.g., Rotaractors) to provide career and skills development and support we will mentor and guide through workshops and mentor program by providing time with members, recruiters, ‘pecha kucha’.
What was discussed: Lots of ideas!
Project team: Kirsti, Andy, Alex and Rob.
Next steps: Speak to Rotaract about possible speaker spot (Andy) and joining in with them on their next backpack project.

Next Meeting: Wednesday 3 March, 6pm at the Cumby
Each project team will discuss further prior to next meeting and report back on progress.
Rob will inform other members of the next meeting date at the next breakfast meeting, and via the club newsletter, and invite other members to attend.

Centenary of Rotary in Australia - Commemorative book
The Rotary International Zone 8 History and Archives Committee is nearing completion of a 400 plus page, hard covered book to mark the Centenary of Rotary in Australia on April 21, 2021. Titled Humanity in Action, it celebrates 100 years of Rotary Clubs in Australia and our near island neighbours.

Please note that advance orders are now being received.  Cost is $25 plus postage.
AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT: ORDER YOUR COPY OF NOW - The high cost of preparation and printing limits the size of the print run to 3,000 at this time and, after District commitments are fulfilled, remaining books will be sold on a ‘first in’ basis for $25 (plus postage) each, including GST.

Given the postage costs of pre-orders, it is suggested Clubs add to the delivery of their promised complimentary copy any additional orders including club members. Presentation of a copy of this valuable historical record to local libraries will present an excellent promotional opportunity with local media in Rotary’s Centenary Year. Books will be sent following the official book launch by the Governor General, David Hurley on April 8, 2021.

The Four Way Test

The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

  1. Is it the Truth?
  2. Is it Fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build Goodwill and better Friendships?
  4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

Affirmation

United in the spirit of Service we value truth, fairness and friendship; and we welcome the opportunity that Rotary gives us to contribute our talents and resources in support of others.

Rotary Club of Adelaide Light Mission Statement

To be recognised as the Service Club of Choice in the Eastern Precinct of Adelaide because we are a Friendly Breakfast Club that appeals to a broad range of busy people who want to make a difference to local and international communities.

Jokes Corner
Some oxymorons

Why is the third hand on the watch called the second hand?

Why do we say something is out of whack? What is a whack?

Why does "slow down" and "slow up" mean the same thing?

Why does "fat chance" and "slim chance" mean the same thing?

Why do "tug" boats push their barges?

Why are they called " stands" when they are made for sitting?

Why is it called "after dark" when it really is "after light"?

Doesn't "expecting the unexpected" make the unexpected expected?

Why are a "wise man" and a "wise guy" opposites?

Why do "overlook" and "oversee" mean opposite things?
