Firstly, this week’s Thursday breakfast is obviously cancelled due to our 7 day COVID lockdown. Meanwhile let’s just be grateful we live where we do… despite East coast jokes, Adelaide’s a well-kept secret!
Last weekend our club and Adelaide City Rotaract broke through on Phase 2 of our Catherine House garden project. Grateful thanks to all volunteers and especially Katey (and Kirsti) for their organising through two years of delays awaiting SA Housing Trust completing their work. Particular thanks to past Club member, Kym Pedler for his unflagging guidance on the whole job. Essentially Job Foreman, Kym brought his energetic, big-hearted, just do it style and superb design and implementation skills of his previous landscaping business.
Summarising last weekend’s work, final plantings were done and two trailer loads of mulch evenly spread over five gardens. Thanks to Rob, Raagini, the two Pauls and Kym together with four Rotaractors and Sam, the shy budding gardener (‘scuse the pun). We’re also glad the two recently inducted Rotaractors, Maria and Will joined in. Kym will connect the watering system timers, mid-week. He wants to arrange another working bee for Catherine House in Angus St, to replace some dead plants and mulch.
Even under this COVID lockdown, Fred’s Van is an essential service so Wednesday night will be our first time operating it to provide food, drinks and winter warmers to marginalised folk in the city. Kirsti, Rob and I are the pilot group with Bernie and Paige from Rotaract. If you have any blankets, socks, scarves, toiletries or even money for these folk please drop them off at Cocina Comida, 4/205 Pirie St. Adelaide; or give them to Kirsti, me or Rob before Wednesday night. It’s cold out there!
Building on Wednesday’s Fred’s Van activity, our breakfast speaker this week was to have been Teresa Branch from Fred’s Van. Best laid plans, etc… this must now wait for another date and we thank Dean for his tenacity in organising our speakers. After this Wednesday’s Fred’s Van stint, we’ll roster some volunteers every three weeks to continue this service in a combined AdLight/AdCity Rotaract venture. Hopefully this commitment won’t be too taxing… it’s certainly a great service.
Ticket sales have now closed for our return Steam Train ride from Mt Barker to Goolwa on Sunday 1st August. We’ve filled a carriage with 58 aboard. We may have a steam train up front with an extra diesel behind to get us up and over Philcox Hill, before heading down southern Mt Lofty Ranges’ eastern escarpment. Hopefully we won’t still be locked down by then… meanwhile, stay COVID safe.

Chairman: Meet/greet speaker for the meeting; introduce and thank speaker. Preparation:- find details about the speaker prior to the meeting. Attendance: Set up reception table (attendance sheet; members list – re -payments; guest welcome sheet; money); register member payments/ apologies/ guests. Hosting: Welcome all at the door; ensure speaker and guests are introduced to appropriatepersons. Furniture: Flags; banner display; Rotary theme banner; gong and hammer; lectern position before and returned after the meeting. Computerset up – Connect to projector. Switch on. Hold function key & press F5 twice. Bottles/cans: Collect bags of bottles/cans at meeting and take to recycle centre for refund, pass refund to Bruce McDonald and empty bags to the next duty member, at the next meeting. Rotaract: Meets alternate Mondays at 6pm (for a 630pm start) at the General HavelockHotel in Hutt Street. Bread Run: Sundays, meet outside Romeo's, North Adelaide at 4:55pm
