Community Refugee Sponsor Association (CRSA) training for our Club’s Refugee Mentor Group is now done. Led by Katey with Rob, Kirsti, Paul E, Margie, Paige and me, our mentor group now awaits formal CRSA approval, next we’ll be matched to a suitable mentee household. Then we’ll meet them and together develop a mutually agreeable mentor support plan. We may involve others in our wider networks for appropriate assistance as needs emerge.
Many Rotarians shared an excellent send-off Yvette organised for Tony Reade’s funeral last Tuesday, capturing his essence and his life’s hugely beneficial impact. Rotary was indeed blessed with Tony’s unique talents from the mid 80s. Our Club culture still reflects his irreverent style and hopefully a little of his creativity. Tony inspirationally led in many fields - building friendships for the disadvantaged at Toc H; 17 years as Councillor and Mayor; Duke of Edinburgh Award assessing; professional photography; Australian Archery team; among others.
Rob and I lunched with Adelaide Rotary at the Oval last Wednesday where they kindly allowed Rob to productively exercise his sales skills for our Grange raffle. Guest speaker Associate Professor, Gabrielle Todd from UniSA told us how Parkinson’s disease affects the ‘substantial nigra’ region of the brain. A cruel disease usually in older people, it affects predominately dopamine-producing neurons with symptoms that develop slowly over years… yet only 5 doses of meth-amphetamine can produce the same damaged ‘substantial nigra’ conditions in younger people.
On a more cheerful note, Kirsti’s team ran another Fred’s Van last Wednesday and Alex has arranged another ‘Chat 2 Belong’ for 10-11am November 20th at Café Outside the Square (34 Whitmore Sq). Katey and Kym’ Catherine House garden maintenance morning is from 9am till noon this Saturday 13th November - so do volunteer if you can, register here - https://forms.gle/sqprTd45uRkg9i3L9.
John Campbell’s Australian Rotary Health (ARH) wine orders will be distributed at the end of this week with several Club members helping to facilitate it. A mutually beneficial exercise, it raised $915 for ARH and provided keenly-priced wine for those decisive enough to seize the opportunity.
If you like bushwalking, there’s one for our Club and Friends at 9:30 am Sunday 21st November from Coromandel Community Centre. Allow 2 hours for the walk and possibly picnic after… but do let me know if you’re coming.
Our next breakfast meeting is Thursday November 11th where guest speaker Paul Ensor will share insights into his own life and times. See you soon.
