This week’s guest speaker was Evelyn O’Loughlin CEO, Volunteering SA & NT.
“Volunteering SA&NT, the peak body for volunteering in South Australia and the Northern Territory, works with individuals, organisations and communities across the range of sectors, e.g. Human Services, Environment, Education, Arts, Sport and Recreation, Justice and Emergency Services.
We aim to provide a credible and informed voice in volunteering, be the centre of knowledge and expertise in volunteering, position volunteering as a core component of a high quality of life, work with volunteers and volunteering communities to enrich the volunteering experience, increase volunteering and encourage self-reliance in volunteer management, recruitment, retention and recognition of volunteers.
Volunteering SA&NT is funded by State and Federal Governments for its peak body role and to provide a range of services. These services include advice to government, training for volunteers and volunteer involving organisations, volunteer referrals, research and policy development.” (Volunteering SA&NT Website).
Volunteering SA&NT was started in 1982 and currently has 22 paid staff and around 80 volunteers registered. Their definition of volunteering is “Volunteering is time willingly given for the common good, without financial gain”.
The latest statistics show that numbers have dropped from 36% of the population in 2010 to 31% in 2014, in Australia. However, despite this, Australia is still the leader in the world for the number of volunteers giving their efforts for no reward.
Evelyn highlighted the changes in demographics of volunteers and that volunteer numbers overall are diminishing. The largest group of volunteers is in the 65+ age group as this is the group with the most spare time, being retired.
The Productivity Commission has done reviews, which show that the younger population is more likely to volunteer for events that have a defined start and end date. In addition, changes in the lifestyle of the younger groups has also had a major effect, for example young men are now spending more time with their families, more families now have both parents working as the cost of living has increased substantially.
This problem is worldwide and organisations seeking volunteers will need to find new ways of encouraging people to volunteer.
Thought for the week “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give” Winston Churchill.

Little Johnny's Chemistry teacher wanted to teach his class a lesson about the evils of liquor, so he set up an experiment that involved a glass of water, a glass of whiskey, and two worms.
"Now, class. Observe what happens to the two the worms," said the professor putting the first worm in the glass of water. The worm in the water moved about, twisting and seemingly unharmed. He then dropped the second worm in the whiskey glass. It writhed in pain for a moment, then quickly sank to the bottom and died.
"Now kids, what lesson can we derive from this experiment?" he asked.
Little Johnny raised his hand and wisely responded, "Drink whiskey and you won't get worms!"
