President's Pen
This week’s meeting is on Thursday 22 August at 7.15 am at the Stamford Plaza Hotel.  If you are unable to attend the meeting or will have guests attending, please email me at kmball@jelkamain.com or text me on 0402853929 by Wednesday lunchtime so that I can advise the Stamford Plaza about numbers attending.  There will be a Board meeting directly after the meeting.

Last Thursday about 8 members, including David Rowe, met at Dulwich for a coffee conversation.

Members will be saddened by the news of the death last Saturday of Tony Williamson, a former member of our Club.  Tony was a former Director and Sergeant of the Club and a former Adelaide City Councillor. He was also involved with the Hutt Street Community Association.

This week’s guest speaker is Dr Troye Wallett, Clinical Director of GenWise which he co-founded in 2014.   GenWise supports health professionals working in aged care.  Dr Wallett will talk about his own self-care strategies and the advice he gives his patients and employees.  His philosophy is that simple changes in how you view the world can have a dramatic impact to your life and to those around you.  His talk may complement our session with John Burston, who showed us how through meditation, even for 30 seconds, we can learn to stress less and enjoy more.

This year our Club has partnered with other Rotary Clubs to apply for two Rotary Foundation District Grants.
1. In partnership with the Rotary Club of Norwood we have applied for a Rotary Foundation District Grant to support an international student for an English language and work experience scholarship.  The sponsorship arrangements include travel to Adelaide, accommodation and a three-month English course at The South Australian College of English (tuition is donated by the College).

2. Along with the Rotary Clubs of Greater South Oz (e-club) and West Torrens, and a personal financial donor, we are partnering with the Rotary Club of Adelaide Parks to apply for a Rotary Foundation District Grant to supply a multifunctional rehabilitation device to the Hampstead Rehabilitation Unit to assist the neurological rehabilitation of patients with impaired motor functions resulting from brain and spinal cord injury and disease.

The Four Way Test

The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

  1. Is it the Truth?
  2. Is it Fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build Goodwill and better Friendships?
  4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

Affirmation

United in the spirit of Service we value truth, fairness and friendship; and we welcome the opportunity that Rotary gives us to contribute our talents and resources in support of others.

Rotary Club of Adelaide Light Mission Statement

Jokes Corner
Frozen Carburetor
You rarely hear about the positive things the Police do, such as this incident involving a biker and a frozen carburetor.
Last January on a bitterly cold winter's day, a North Dakota State Trooper on patrol came upon a motorcyclist who was stalled by the roadside.
The biker was swathed in heavy protective clothing and wearing a full-face helmet to protect the face from the cold weather.
"What's the matter?" asked the Trooper.
“Carburetor’s frozen," was the terse reply.
"Pee on it. That'll thaw it out."
"I can't," said the biker.
“OK, watch me closely and I'll show you."
The Trooper unzipped and promptly warmed the carburetor as promised.
Moments later the bike started and the rider drove off, waving.
A few days later, the local State Troopers' office received a note of thanks from the father of the motorcyclist.

It began:
"On behalf of my daughter Janice  . . . "
