Those who were able to attend the last breakfast meeting on 14 July came away with better understanding and renewed confidence in Australia’s voting system. Our guest speaker was newly minted Adelaide City Rotaract President, Nic Egan, who comprehensively explained it all in a highly digestible manner.
Our next breakfast meeting on 28 July at the Terrace Hotel is largely in your control. Moderated by Richard, we’ll ask what you think is working well in our club, what’s not and whether there’s anything you’d like to change. I hope you can manage to get along so we can make sure we maintain the kind of Club you want.
By the time you read this, some of you may have gone to see Kirsti’s Community Service committee meeting on Tuesday 19 July, preceded by Katey’s Refugee Mentor meeting at the Astor Hotel. For those of you who did visit, I’m sure you now have a better idea of all that transpires there.
One such activity is helping our Afghan family become skilled in English. Our diligent Friend of AdLight Rotary, BBQ and Treasure Box volunteer, Fatemeh used her Iranian Farsi language skills to help Abdullah and his family grasp the nuances of English. Our next Bunnings BBQ on Saturday 30 July should be more profitable than for many a year, because Bunnings snag prices have risen for the first time in 15 years. Di is fishing for volunteers, so if you normally can’t do it (perhaps due to employment) but can do Saturday 30 July, please let Di know…. she’d be hugely relieved. 😌
We had five volunteers at Edwardstown’s Treasure Boxes 10 till noon last Thursday. If you’d like to do it again, or give it a try then please let Kirsti know and join the team roster.
I’ll be away chasing some sun in far north Queensland for the next week but I look forward to seeing many of you on the 28th.

Attendance: Set up reception table (attendance sheet; members list – re -payments; guest welcome sheet; money); register member payments/ apologies/ guests. Hosting: Welcome all at the door; ensure speaker and guests are introduced to appropriatepersons. Furniture: Flags; banner display; Rotary theme banner; gong and hammer; lectern position before and returned after the meeting. Computerset up – Connect to projector. Switch on. Bottles/cans: Collect bags of bottles/cans at meeting and take to recycle centre for refund, pass refund to Bruce McDonald and empty bags to the next duty member, at the next meeting. During a visit to the mental hospital, I asked the Director how do you determine whether or not a patient should be institutionalized?
'Well,' said the Director, 'we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub.'
'Oh, I understand,' I said. 'A normal person would use the bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup.'
'No' said the Director, 'A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?'
