Last week’s meeting commemorating the Australian Rotary Health (ARH) Lift the Lid campaign with a ‘Hat Day’. It was great fun and many interesting ‘hat stories’ were shared (see pictures below). Paul Ensor’s experiences with panama hats took out the prize… start a conversation by asking him about it.
Our John Campbell’s been on the ARH Board for many years, explaining the good work it does with little fanfare. ARH is a company formed by Australian Rotary Districts, funded by all clubs and is now Australia’s largest to independent source of independent medical health research funding. ARH offers scholarships for rural medical/nursing students, supports otherwise neglected areas of health and promotes findings to the community. Its focus is researching mental illness in the young (0-25 years), particularly to prevent mental health disorders. Very constructive work in an area of extreme need.
Our Club has another Fred’s Van this Wednesday. Bookings are available through Alex for the next Chat 2 Belong, 10-11am on November 20th at Café Outside the Square (34 Whitmore Sq). Watch out for a Catherine House garden maintenance morning (9-11:30am), probably Saturday 13th November - do volunteer if you can.
Adelaide Light’s Refugee Mentor Group (Katey, Margie, Rob, Kirsti, Paul Ensor, Paige and me) did half of our training through Community Refugee Sponsorship Australia (CRSA). This training will be completed next week, then we’ll then be matched with an Adelaide refugee household and start to discover how best to help. That assistance may draw upon our wider club members and networks but we can work it out as we go.
If you enjoy a bush walk, we’ve arranged one at 9:30 am Sunday 20th November from Coromandel Community Centre. Allow 2 hours and maybe picnic after, let me know if you’re coming.

Sadly, Tony Reade died on Sunday after a long illness, lovingly supported by his wife and Club member, Yvette. Tony was instrumental in the foundation of our Club as one of seven Rotarians to leave the Rotary Club of Adelaide in June 1986 to form our Rotary Club of Adelaide Light named ‘Light’ for the daylight of our breakfast origins (though Col William Light history adds to the choice).
Always creative and entertaining, Tony was the Club’s first President and later Governor of our Rotary District 9500 in 1993/94. His showmanship, disregard for stuffy Rotary protocols and taste for change created a culture of fun and informality. His infectious laugh and larger than life personality made our Club a favourite for other Rotarians to visit.
In Tony’s year as District Governor, our Club organised the District Conference in Broken Hill where his forward thinking ensured childcare was offered (a Rotary first). The formal Saturday night ball became instead a Denim and Black Bow-tie event at the local racecourse with bush bands and hay bales for seats and tables.
Tony organised specially marked ‘two-up’ pennies Instead of traditional conference tickets. This ‘ticket’ gave opportunity to win prizes and possibly get conference fees refunded. The special Friday night guest was artist Pro Hart, whom Tony knew from driving him around Australia in Pro’s brightly painted Rolls Royce.
Being a breakfast club where people dashed off to work, Tony improved socialising by organising “Guess Who is Coming to Dinner” events where members either hosted or visited others for a night of fun and hospitality.
In all Tony’s Rotary adventures, his wife Yvette was there to support and faithfully ensure all went as planned… the Yin for Tony’s Yang. We’ve lost an outstanding Rotarian in Tony but we’re thankful for his influence and offer our condolences to Yvette and family.
The funeral is 1pm next Tuesday 9th November at Berry & Sons, 200 Magill Rd, Norwood. Details in Saturday's Advertiser - funeral attendance is COVID-limited to 150 but it will be live streamed.

All Kids is an education program for children in the coastal commune of Ream in Sihanouk Province, Cambodia which aims to have as many of their children as possible achieve high school grade 12.
Jenny Neale, wife of District Governor Jeff, has adopted All Kids as her partners project and invites you to come and enjoy a fun afternoon at the Burnside Ballroom on Sunday 14th November from 2-5pm.
