I was in sunny Darwin last week, back Sunday but now quarantined till 29 August by Monday’s SA Govt reaction to NT’s 3-day lockdown. Kirsti flew to Darwin on Friday and is now locked-in on her visit there with her Dad and Mum (Martti and Karen), doing DG meetings with some of the 84 clubs in Martti’s huge District. Kirsti may be quarantined 14 days on return under SA’s tight quarantine rules.
I missed our own evening meeting here last Thursday that Margie kindly chaired when Rob experienced unpleasant benign vertigo that day. Fortunately, Rob’s now well again and the meeting went well. Apart from those present and ‘zoomers’ Don and Paige, a new visitor (Sonal de Silva) was welcomed and we hope to see more of him.
Kirsti zoomed an ‘End Trachoma’ presentation for the meeting and updated attendees on Community projects (that committee meets next Tuesday 6:15pm at the Astor). ‘End Trachoma’ has simple kits to improve hygiene among indigenous communities in Central Australia where water is less plentiful - we anticipate assembling some of these kits soon.
Angus’ International committee meets this week about a Timor-Leste water and sanitation project for a TAFE-like school at Manatuto - 64km east of Dili on the north coast and national hero Xanana Gusmao’s birthplace. While in Darwin I met project co-ordinator Ray Fauntleroy who has considerable offshore project experience and lives in Darwin. Ray visited Manatuto with Martti and Karen to refine the project which was proposed/costed by Manatuto Rotaract and supported by local Rotarians. A photo and map of Manatuto is below:
Last Wednesday evening we operated ‘Fred’s Van’ again with Kirsti, Rob, Paige and Kevin (a bushwalking friend of Richard’s and mine). We’ll introduce other helpers in our 3 weekly cycle and Kirsti has a list of those interested, so let her know if you’d like to be one. Meanwhile there’s many constructive projects you could become involved with, so do pester us.
Alex will chair our next ‘Chat 2 Belong’ coffee morning 10am this Saturday 21st August at Café Outside the Square (34 Whitmore Sq). If you know recent migrants who may benefit, please let Kirsti or me know ASAP. It’s a chance for recent migrants to sit and chat with established ‘Adelaidians’ about things that can help them feel they truly belong more quickly. We obviously need some Rotarians too (50/50 ideally), it’s satisfying for all concerned.
Don’t forget the SteamRanger train ride from Mt Barker to Goolwa return is this Sunday 22nd. The train leaves at 10am, so we’ll meet 9:45am at the SteamRanger station, 11 Railway Place, Mount Barker - map link here. You’ll be back by 6pm for the freeway trip home.

Manatuto town and map - 3,700 people, no electricity. They need potable water and improved sanitation
ROTARY ADELAIDE AND THE PROSPECT DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB PRESENT THE 6TH “NOT THE TEST MATCH DINNER”, TO BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY 15 DECEMBER 2021 AT THE NATIONAL WINE CENTRE.
It is with pleasure and pride that we can report that the NTTMD is on again. This year will be particularly special as the English Test side will be here for the Ashes series.
The key details:
Mike Atherton (former England Captain) has agreed to be our special guest speaker, while former Prospect Cricket Club team mates Joe Root (current England captain) & Nathan Lyon (now Australian spinner) will start with a pre-dinner banter session (which will be pre-recorded because with the Test starting the following day, Joe and Nathan will be involved in team meetings at the time of our dinner). The wonderful National Wine Centre is the confirmed venue.
So all we need now is a crowd of at least 300, and we would like you and your friends to be part of those 300 and consider attending because it:
will be a very enjoyable evening - with great food and wine plus exceptional international entertainment - particularly for someone with an interest in cricket;
is an important fundraiser for Rotary Adelaide (and for the Prospect District Cricket Club) and there is real scope to continue increasing the funds raised. More dollars raised means the more we can support needy community projects.
We are therefore asking all Club members to get involved and consider:
agreeing to organise and host a table of 10 ($130 per head) of your friends from either inside and/or outside the Club; or

As this is a major fundraiser for Rotary Adelaide, we also need your help in gathering items for our silent auction. Ideally, we would like to offer "experiences" such as group wine tastings, weekend packages to the Barossa Valley, Kangaroo Island, the Adelaide Hills, or somewhere similar; and opportunities like driving on the Tailem Bend track or doing a Skye Walk at Adelaide Oval etc or indeed anything else that might appeal to our audience. In addition to the silent auction we are also planning a “Wine Wall” so we are also asking if you could assist by sourcing a bottle or more of medium to good quality wine for the wall. So if you or any of your contacts can help with any of these fundraising initiatives, please contact Rob, Barry or D'Arcy.
The Not The Test Match Dinner is now an iconic event. If you have not been before here is your opportunity to get on board and be involved in what is a truly wonderful night.
