The response to Kirsti's request for donations for the Share the Dignity, It's in the Bag event was excellent, thank you very much. I will be attending Coffee Conversation this coming Thursday to collect any last minute donations and I will be collecting donations on Wednesday that were dropped off at Coast FM.
Our next meeting on Thursday 26th.November we will be packing the bags and Kirsti has arranged for a representative from Share the Dignity to address the club during breakfast before we commence packing.
John, Bruce and Myself play croquet most Thursday afternoon's and their members have been very generous in buying Grange raffle tickets, I hope that you are experiencing similar success, remembering that the raffle will be drawn on Friday 11th. December at the Riverside Rowing Club. We must have all books returned (sold or unsold) at our Breakfast meeting on Thursday 10th. Dec., or earlier and it is your responsibility, thank you.
I also hope that the majority of you can attend our combined Christmas evening on Friday 11th. Dec. and have begun your quoit practice to ensure we win the Teapot Challenge.
At the time of writing, Di has just one vacancy left for the first weekend of selling Christmas trees at OTR and Bunnings at Kent Town, plus the barbeques at Mile End which is an excellent achievement and thank you to everyone who was able to volunteer. The following two weekends will be much easier to manage without a barbeque to cater for.
Not the Test Match Dinner will be held at 6.30pm on Wednesday 16 December at a new venue – the National Wine Centre.
The cost is $130 per head for a lovely three course meal and drinks.
Our guest speaker will be internationally acknowledged author and journalist Gideon Haigh, the “Australian’s “ cricket specialist who will talk about his career and about Indian cricket and its impact on the game world-wide.
We will also be talking during the evening to Indian batting legend, VVS Laxman, live from India (on the big screen) about his own career and the upcoming Test series between India and Australia.
In addition, former Zimbabwe fast bowler and well known opera singer, Henry Olonga, will compere the evening and also sing for us.
There will be provision for 240 guests and still meet the COVID requirements. Tickets can be purchased from Rob Falconer, Barry Noble or D'Arcy Walsh.
Share the Dignity is an organisation that works to make a real, on the ground difference in the lives of women experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence or doing it tough and focus on ending period poverty in Australia. “It’s In the Bag” campaign runs from 20th to 29th November and is predominately a donation drive of basic essentials, period products and some special items which get delivered to registered charities to be distributed to those in crisis in time for Christmas.
We will be doing the adult bags and I ask that members, their friends, family and colleagues start collecting any of the following items:
Handbags or small female style backpacks that are new or if pre-loved they have to be in great condition, clean and no clear signs of use
Shampoo & Conditioner
Toothbrush & Toothpaste
Bodywash or Soap
Roll-on Deodorant
Sealed packets of pads or tampons (regular to super absorbency recommended)
They also encourage additional items that would make someone feel special such as makeup, accessories, moisturiser, facemasks, hand cream, handmade items, purses etc. Keep in mind, 'what would I like to receive during such a difficult time?'
Note - All items donated should be in their original packaging, sealed and in great condition.
The plan is to pool all donations by 19 November, and then pack the bags together at our meeting on Thurs 26th November. This aligns with International Day For The Elimination of Violence Against Women which is on the 25th November.
