Last Tuesday, two sub committees met at the Astor Hotel for their monthly meetings . Firstly the Community Refugee Mentorship group , followed by the Community Service Committee with 8 in
attendance. Their next meetings are on 20th September at 6 and 7 pm and all members are welcome to attend.
Our Coffee Conversation last Thursday morning had four attendees including Jeff Cluse, District 9510 Area Governor for Area 12, Yvette, Elaine and Dean. Thursday 1st September is our next Coffee Conversation and hopefully more of us can attend.
The Breakfast Meeting this week is on Thursday 25th August with Margie Steffens presenting her Life and Times, which is not to be missed.
Please remember that the club's planned barbecue is on Sunday 4th September by the banks of the Torrens River near the Adelaide University footbridge from 11.30 am. So far 14 people
have confirmed their attendance and I would love it if more could join us.
President John has sent some wonderful photos of his walking trip in Albania and is due to return
this coming Thursday, but whether he will make breakfast, I am unsure.
Here’s some selected photos for impressions of Madeira.
Madeira is a volcanic island in the Atlantic, about 520km west of Morocco and 1,000km from Portugal It's part of Portugal, having been claimed by them in 1419. The population is now about 250,000 with tourism it’s main industry followed by agriculture. Rich soil and a steadily moderate tropical climate (av min/max = 14/26C) make it 'plant heaven' as everything flowers with prosperity. Tourists are mostly British and Portuguese with some Germans (and the occasional Aussie).
The island’s main city is Funchal, located on the more populated south coast and the island is about 55km EW by 23km NS.

The attached photos include the Funchal food markets; the cable car up to the hills behind. Our walks included the rugged and dry north eastern tip of the island; then across the more lush northern coast to the western tip. As you’ll see the beaches are pebbly (rocky really) and the island is both fertile and rugged with crevasses, valleys and spectacular outcrops. Since the 1500s they've built irrigation channels (levadas) to move water from the mountainous regions safely down to terraced agricultural use. We walked alongside levadas on many of our walks and as you’ll see from the photos it is mostly green and beautiful. Surrounded by the Atlantic ocean, fish are plentiful and great eating.
Among the last photos is a great little trio of accomplished musicians who entertained us for lunch today. All being well, I'll fly off to Albania via London on Saturday.

Attendance: Set up reception table (attendance sheet; members list – re -payments; guest welcome sheet; money); register member payments/ apologies/ guests.
