Last week, our Community Service committee and Refugee Mentoring groups met to continue their excellent work. Some members may as yet not been involved but we can be justly proud of our superb role in this thanks to Kirsti and Katey’s leadership. Our Club’s mentoring is particularly valued by Erfan and all the Abidi family, so thank you to all of you who contribute. It’s a huge thing to leave one’s supports and country behind, then quickly adapt to a new language and customs, rebuilding in unfamiliar circumstances.
Some related non-Rotary activity by many of our mentors on a personal basis aims to raise funds for sending to displaced families in Afghanistan. This includes a 4 July fundraising dinner at Parwana Family Kitchen, which was quickly sold out. Even so, if you’re interested in donating, look here. People abandoned in the western allied exit are without income in a broken economy and hiding from vengeful foes.
Alex organised last Saturday’s ‘Chat 2 Belong’ at the City West Community Centre with help from Maria, Stuart and Rob (see photos). Each month this is a valued way for some new Aussies to connect better with their new home and feel stronger belonging. Let Alex know if you’d like to be involved next month.
Kirsti has rustled up a volunteer packing team to help at Treasure Boxes this Thursday 23 June from 10am-2pm at 6/1-5 De Laine Ave, Edwardstown. Another option for the same task is on Thursday 14 July, if you’d like to join the team. Otherwise, there’s a Tree planting day in the Hills on Saturday 2nd July, just let Kirsti know ASAP if you’d like to get involved.
Our pallet of Mitchell’s Watervale riesling sold fast within a week. Emboldened by this success we ordered Angus Mitchell’s last 7 cases, a few of which have already sold. Do let us know ASAP if you or any of your network would like one of the last cases. It’s been a good funding deal for us but also for our astutely decisive buyers.
Rotary’s ROMAC Chair, D’Arcy Walsh from Adelaide Rotary will speak to us at this Thursday’s June 23 breakfast about a Regionalisation Pilot program to seek ways to improve support for Zone 8 clubs and members. If most Clubs agree, Rotary International will authorise the Pilot to begin. So please try to make this meeting, as we’ll need to vote on it soon.
Our Club Rollover Dinner is 30 June so if you’ve not booked, move quickly to book here.
For the benefit of members, we will aim to give the Duty Roster a few weeks ahead - see below.
