President's Pen

Last Wednesday evening, just nine people attended our monthly dinner meeting which included three Rotaractors. I am very aware that we need have a strong agenda for these meetings to make them meaningful. If you have a suggestion/s, I would love to hear from you.

On Friday evening, nine members attended the excellent quiz night run by the Adelaide City Rotaract Club which was a sell-out and was supported by several Rotary Clubs. We finished in the middle of a very large pack.

Currently we have collected $554.60 from recycled bottles and cans and our budget for the Rotary year is $650 which is now very achievable.

This coming Thursday 30th. May is Coffee Conversation at the Velo under the grandstand at Victoria Park at 9.30am.

Our next Breakfast Meeting is on Thursday 6th. June at 7am. for a 7.15am. start where we will be inducting three Rotaractors into our club, Karagh, Katey and Kirsty.

Thursday 13th June - Coffee Conversation

Thursday 20th. June - Breakfast Meeting

Wednesday 26th June - Evening Dinner Meeting

From the 1st. July the meeting dates will alter which I hope to be able to announce next week.

Last Friday morning John Campbell and myself had a very successful meeting with David Donald, the General Manager of the Stamford Plaza Hotel, together with Kaytie Stuart, the Conference & Events Sales Manager. David expressed a desire to have a service club meet regularly at the Stamford and met all of our Boards queries very positively which I will outline below.

The room offered (The Excecutive Lounge) is exceptional with no room hire.

The cost of breakfast will be $16.00

We have agreed that our minimum attendance number to have breakfast should be 16 as after 6th. June we will have 24 members.

They are very happy to store our cricket equipment bag.

Their carparking is normally $30.00 and they have offered it to our members and our club guests for $5.00.

I should also highlight that the tram goes right past and there is meter parking down by the Torrens Parade Ground.

It is agreed that our first breakfast meeting will be on Thursday 6th. June at the Stamford, 150 North Terrace, directly opposite Parliament House.

We have also confirmed Thursday 11th. July for our Changeover Breakfast Meeting which will include a plated breakfast, (cost to be confirmed).

SA Police Officer of the Year Award 2019

Dear Assistant District Governor

South Australia Police Officer of the Year 2019

The South Australia Police Officer of the Year Award has been a major vocational project of the Rotary Club of Unley each year since 1978.

The award recognises an outstanding SA Police Officer who, in serving the community shows outstanding acts of courage, kindness, understanding, compassion or devotion to duty. We are looking for an officer who performs beyond and above the call of duty. That performance may be on the job or providing significant off-duty community volunteering.

Our search for the SA Police Office of the Year for 2019 opens early June and In this regard we have distributed a number of the enclosed poster to each of your clubs Presidents and asked them to arrange for the posters to be displayed in prominent locations visible to the general public.

Nominations are received from organisations, service clubs, community groups and individuals from across the State of South Australia and the support of your clubs is sought to spread the word throughout their areas. Each club is most welcome and encouraged to nominate a worthy South Australian police officer for this award.

Details of the award and nomination forms may be found on the Unley Rotary website at http://www.unley.rotaryclub.org.au. Any encouragement you can provide to the clubs in your district to submit a nomination would be very much appreciated. The continuing success of the Award relies on nominations being received.

In 2019 after the success of last year’s event, the presentation will again be held at a public ceremony at the Royal Adelaide Show on the 6th September 2019 at 11.30 am. Last year’s event provided both radio and television exposure for Rotary and we hope the same will occur this year. Members of your District are more than welcome to attend the event.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me and thanking you for your support of the Award.

Yours in Rotary,

Leonie Kewen

Coordinator, SA Police Officer of the Year, Rotary Club of Unley

Message from DG David Egan
Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Rotary Service Using Vocational Talents & Interests

Service in Rotary takes many forms and one of the most enriching forms of service and an opportunity to learn more about Rotary at a different level, is to serve via the many District Committees using one’s vocational talents and interests.

Currently, as we transition from one Rotary year to the next and look towards District 9510 a year later, there is an opportunity for a person or persons who may have an interest, talent or background in insurance and risk management to serve with our existing and developing team in this established area.

Whilst an insurance or risk background will assist, it is not essential as processes are well established; having a strong interest in the field and in supporting Clubs by helping them to implement established processes under the guidance of the existing team is all that is needed.

Should you or anyone you know have a desire to serve the Clubs via the District using your interests or talents in this important District function area, please advise DGE Jane Owens by email on dg19-20@rotary9500.org or by telephone on 0438 844 485.

The Four Way Test

The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

  1. Is it the Truth?
  2. Is it Fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build Goodwill and better Friendships?
  4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

Affirmation

United in the spirit of Service we value truth, fairness and friendship; and we welcome the opportunity that Rotary gives us to contribute our talents and resources in support of others.

Rotary Club of Adelaide Light Mission Statement

To be recognised as the Service Club of Choice in the Eastern Precinct of Adelaide because we are a Friendly Breakfast Club that appeals to a broad range of busy people who want to make a difference to local and international communities.
