Our first breakfast meeting at the Mercure Grosvenor Hotel last Thursday was a great success and I want to congratulate Raagini on her presentation on addressing the club's Sustainable Development Goals which has given us all lots of food for thought. To the best of my knowledge this was a first for our club.
Afterwards I was able to raise several points with the Hotel's Conference and Events Executive, Lily Irving which she has very quickly addressed. If given advance notice, the hotel can address the issue of food allergies, so please let me know if this affects you and Lily has arranged for small side plates to be provided to accommodate each table's fruit platter.
To ensure that the hot meals do not cool down, we have agreed that the hotel will serve us alternately (excluding any dietary requirements) and I am sure that you can swap with your immediate neighbour if required. A reminder that we are not being charged a room hire fee and the hotel can only provide one staff member.
In regard to the hotel car parking, we are being charged the same amount as the hotel staff, $10.00. One option suggested was to park at Bonython and catch the tram into the city, which stops directly outside the railway station.
Last week club members supported the motion to organize a raffle featuring a bottle of Grange plus other excellent wine for 2nd and 3rd. prizes. John W has organized the printing of tickets which will sell for $5.00 each or a book of four for $20.00. All club members will be given books to sell, which we realize will be a challenge for some, however as our fundraising has been so severely affected this year, it is hoped that this raffle may contribute approximately $3500 to the bottom line.
This week, Thursday 15th. October, we have organised a breakfast meeting instead of a coffee conversation, when Andries and myself will facilitate a club conversation on our club strategy going forward and I look forward to everyone's participation.
Margie Steffens has been invited by Adelaide Parks to address their club members about the Community Outreach Dental Program on Wednesday 25th. November at the Navy, Military and Airforce Club, which I hope to attend.
Share the Dignity is an organisation that works to make a real, on the ground difference in the lives of women experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence or doing it tough and focus on ending period poverty in Australia. “It’s In the Bag” campaign runs from 20th to 29th November and is predominately a donation drive of basic essentials, period products and some special items which get delivered to registered charities to be distributed to those in crisis in time for Christmas.
We will be doing the adult bags and I ask that members, their friends, family and colleagues start collecting any of the following items:
Handbags or small female style backpacks that are new or if pre-loved they have to be in great condition, clean and no clear signs of use
Shampoo & Conditioner
Toothbrush & Toothpaste
Bodywash or Soap
Roll-on Deodorant
Sealed packets of pads or tampons (regular to super absorbency recommended)
They also encourage additional items that would make someone feel special such as makeup, accessories, moisturiser, facemasks, hand cream, handmade items, purses etc. Keep in mind, 'what would I like to receive during such a difficult time?'
Note - All items donated should be in their original packaging, sealed and in great condition.
The plan is to pool all donations by 19 November, and then pack the bags together at our meeting on Thurs 26th November. This aligns with International Day For The Elimination of Violence Against Women which is on the 25th November.

5. General Meeting - 26th October (6pm, The Havelock Hotel)
At our next meeting, we will be hearing from Environmental Scientist, Tim Jarvis AM. Tim Jarvis AM runs The Forktree Project, which is a registered charity whose goal is to return a 133-acre former pastoral property on the Fleurieu Peninsula back to nature by re-establishing tens of thousands of native trees and shrubs on the property, which will in turn bring back native animals, insects and birds as well as sequester tens of thousands of tonnes of carbon. The project began only 18 months ago, yet already 6,400 native trees and shrubs have been planted and a significant number of volunteers of all ages have been involved. What has become abundantly clear is the potential of projects like Forktree not just to help heal the planet but to engage individuals in the battle against climate change and empower them to be part of the solution. Join us to hear from the founders of The Forktree Project about the journey so far and how you can get involved.
Registering for events ahead of time will help us with our COVID-19 planning to make sure we're all staying safe and healthy.

Have you ever wondered why foreigners have trouble with the English Language?
There is no egg in the eggplant, no ham in the hamburger, and neither pine nor apple in the pineapple.
English muffins were not invented in England. French fries were not invented in France.
We sometimes take English for granted, but if we examine its paradoxes we find that quicksand takes you down slowly, boxing rings are square, and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
If writers write, how come fingers don't fing. If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn't the plural of phone booth be phone beeth.
If the teacher taught, why didn't the preacher praught.
Why do people recite at a play, yet play at a recital? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language where a house can burn up as it burns down, and in which you fill in a form by filling it out, and a bell is only heard once it goes!
English was developed by people, not computers and it reflects the creativity of the human race (Which of course isn't a race at all).
