Last Friday’s ‘Afghan Interpreter’ book launch at Unley Town Hall went very well and all profits go to helping those still trapped by Taliban policy in Afghanistan. The author, Joe Cassar was also an honoured guest at a Lord Mayoral reception in the Queen Adelaide Room at Adelaide Town Hall on Monday. The Cuppa Conversation Lilli organised last Saturday at Botanic Garden’s Fibonacci Café was a huge success. if a tad chilly. Word got around and Lili clearly has pulling power as about 30 attended, with 8 Rotarians also sprinkled among the migrants present. Conversation flowed freely and Lili, Paige and Yvette will soon advise when the July event is scheduled.
Yvette and I are all ready for this Thursday’s Club Changeover Dinner at the Caledonian Inn’s Barton Room in North Adelaide. I understand 48 diners are expected and there may even still be time if you’ve been slow to decide… ask to book via Yvette here.
I attended Mt Barker Rotary Club’s Changeover lunch on Sunday where my wife, Deborah’s elderly mother is a member. Deborah’s Dad was twice President of that club and Deborah was Charter President of its spinoff Mt Barker Rotaract Club in the early 70s. We may have an opportunity to work with Mt Barker Rotary on their playground dismantling project with Timor Lesté in mind. Time will tell but Paul Jupp’s committee and Kirsti’s family connections may yet help create useful future outcomes with this.
Otherwise, I encourage you to wish Yvette well in her coming year as Club President. I’m sure we’ll all get behind her in the activities that lie ahead.
Last Friday, several Adelaide Light Rotary members attended the launch of "The Afghan Interpreter" by new author Joseph Cassar.
The book is based on a true story of an Afghan man who provided interpreter services for Australian forces and, along with his family, was one of the last evacuated after the fall of Kabul to Taliban forces - a very emotional read.
Profits from book sales will be used to fund charities supporting those living in poverty in Afghanistan and furthering girls’ education in Afghanistan.
It was great to catch up with Gill Hicks MBE AM, who was a Keynote speaker at District 9500's Conference in 2015 (AdLight organised this Conference in DG John Campbell's year). Gill interviewed the author, and Katey Halliday did the introduction on the night.

On Saturday July 29th there will be a tree planting event with the Council. It'll be from 930-12 at a site on Mann Tce in North Adelaide
It will run similar to last year, starting with a site induction and planting demonstration. They'll supply gloves and will have all the tools and plants ready to go on the day.

At any event, the people whose seats are furthest from the aisle, always arrive last.
They are the ones who will leave their seats several times to go for food, drinks, or the toilet and who leave early before the end of the performance.
The folks in the aisle seats come early, never move once, have long gangly legs or big bellies and stay to the bitter end of the performance. The aisle people also are very surly folk.
