Presidents Message (via Past President John Campbell)
With increased attendance last week, John Karran gave an enlightening address ‘Creating an Heirloom’ which was supported by photos showing the development of beautiful jewellery from the basic projects. Everyone was interested and could have listened to him more - perhaps another time.
In January each year. at the Rotary International Assembly, the incoming President of Rotary International announces the theme for the forthcoming Rotary Year. On Monday, our time, President Elect John Germ (a member of the Rotary Club of Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA) declared the theme for 2016-2017 to be ‘Rotary Serving Humanity’.
Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris, believed that serving humanity is “the most worthwhile thing a person can do.”
You may recall at the 2014 District Conference at McCracken, Victor Harbor, former Senator Alan Ferguson, made this quote:
‘Service is the rent we payfor our room on earth’. He went on to say that we should‘make sure our Rent is Up to date’.
RI President-elect John F. Germ said this week ‘that being a part of Rotary is a great opportunity to make that happen.
He went on to say - “I believe everyone recognizes the opportunity to serve Rotary for what it truly is: not a small opportunity, but a great one; an opportunity of a lifetime to change the world for the better, forever through Rotary’s service to humanity. Rotary members around the globe are serving humanity by providing clean water to underdeveloped communities, promoting peace in conflict areas, and strengthening communities through basic education and literacy. But none more important than our work to eradicate polio worldwide. After a historic year in which transmission of the wild poliovirus was stopped in Nigeria and all of Africa, Germ said we are closer than ever to ending polio.”
Over the last few years, the Rotary Presidents have presented us with wonderful and challenging themes:
2014-15 –‘Light Up Rotary’ – to bring light and hope to local and distant disadvantaged and vulnerable communities and enhance our brand to the world.
2015-16 – ‘Be a Gift to the World’- to share our talents with those less fortunate through direct participation or supporting The Rotary Foundation’s supported projects or direct into our own communities.
2016-17 – ‘Rotary serving Humanity’.
These themes prompt us to take action.
I am very proud of the turnaround in our Club as we have gained member engagement in sourcing and embracing new fundraising projects that will give us greater opportunity to serve others. This is what Rotary Serving Humanity is.
I look forward to seeing this theme develop over the next year.
This year, the Rotary Round Table will also include the AGs and Chairs training.

We have now passed the half way mark of the Rotary year. This has been a time when many Rotarians renew their Centurion Club donation - at least $100 per year to the Rotary Foundation -which is tax deductible. Contributions also count towards a Paul Harris Fellow and your Club's Annual Programs Fund giving total for the Rotary Foundation.
Rotarians can make individual donations or alternatively Clubs may make donations on behalf of members and others who can be presented with a PHF in recognition of their special service.
PLEASE ENSURE THAT ALL DONATIONS ARE LISTED ON THE APPROPRIATE DONOR FORM WHICH CAN BE FOUND ON THE D9500 WEBSITE:
A reminder to Clubs that are intending to participate in the “End Polio Now” challenge by making a contribution of US$1500 to the End Polio Now campaign that to qualify as having completed the challenge and thus receive the Recognition Certificate a donation of US$1,500 (not AU$1,500).
While any amount donated will always be most welcomed, to qualify for the Recognition Certificate Australian Clubs will need to donate an amount of AU$2,115 which based on current exchange rates equates to US$1,500. Recognition certificates will be sent ONLY to Clubs that achieve the US$1500 contribution level. Enquiries to PDG Ed King Email: edward.king3@bigpond.com Phone: 84475989 Mobile: 0419 334 181.

Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with those expensive double pane energy-efficient kind. Then, this week I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn't paid for them.
Now just because I'm blonde doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I told him just what his fast talking Sales guy had told me last year.... Namely, that in ONE YEAR these windows would pay for themselves! Helllooooo? It's been a year!
There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up. He didn't call back. Bet he felt dumb!
