"Community Mental Health Services and Economic Development in Uganda"

Diane & Pavel will discuss the Rotary Global Grant entitled, "Community Mental Health Services and Economic Development in Uganda". They'll share about the project activities, describe the eventual impact, speak to the incredible collaborations, and charm you with their vision. Specifically, they'll explain the power of community mental health workers in offering effective mental health services in post-conflict Northern Uganda and the significance of conducting empowerment skills training for successfully discharged women to improve the social determinants of mental health.

December is DISEASE PREVENTION & TREATMENT Month
Our health is everything. Yet 400 million people in the world can’t afford or don’t have access to basic health care.

Click here to see what Rotary is doing to help! https://youtu.be/Qhls8k6uE8E

This month, we celebrate the work Rotarians worldwide are doing to combat diseases through effective treatment and prevention. In 1985, Rotary pledged to eradicate polio, and look at the progress that has occurred! Today, Rotary International has partnered with the World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and regional governments worldwide to complete this pledge.

Although infectious diseases continue to be a major cause of illness and death across the globe, they are not the major health concerns for most developed countries. Now many people are seeing their lives shortened by chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Many of these conditions are not caused by infectious agents but are rather due to certain health behaviors and social conditions.

Rotary’s continued involvement in Disease Prevention and Treatment will thus need to be directed toward finding solutions to these social and behavioral determinants of health while continuing to fight against existing and emerging disease threats. You as a Rotarian have been enlisted as being a part of that fight. Thanks for all you do to support these important initiatives.

The Rotary Foundation is changing the world by providing grants for projects and activities around the globe.

Judy Casey
  1. 1. Where were you born and where did you grow up? I was born in Houston, Texas, and I grew up in Dallas. I lived two blocks from Steve Kidd, a Rotarian in our club until a year or so ago. My husband and I had his grandfather (Ogden) for math. I left Texas happily when I was 20, having just married.

  2. Coffee I love!

  3. I played the piano from ages 7 - 17. I broke my dad’s heart when I quit.

  4. Favorite sport to watch: Baseball — I loved living in Milwaukee when the Brewers were on top!

  5. My professional mentor is/was Dr. Tom Crawford who was Superintendent of Schools in Academy District 20 in the 1980’s and 1990’s. He had faith in me as a leader when he selected me to guide the building of Antelope Trails Elementary School in Gleneagle. Ray Nunn’s construction firm helped us at every step of the way! We opened the school in August, 1992. That professional opportunity was the highlight of my years as an educator which began in 1960.

  6. I don’t have pets now, but I have loved having cats - Mister Marvelousheart was my favorite cat. I also loved Miss Mellowheartheart.

  7. No, I don’t collect anything now, but, in a sense, I collect online jigsaw puzzles which I enjoy doing every day.cool

  8. One thing that I’ve done that I don’t want to do again is move - nowe have lived in two boarding school dormitories and four homes in our 61 years together, and we are here to stay right here!heart

Kathleen's Korner
Hello, my lovely Rotarians!

Several years ago I was the winning bidder at an auction for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and won a trip to New York City that was coordinated by NBC. So almost exactly two years ago, I took my son, Stephen (AKA the Rockstar) with me for five fun-filled days of experiencing the magic of New York City! It was the very first time for this Oregonian girl but my son had been there MANY times before!

We went to several Broadway shows - The Book of Mormon, SMASH (because I thought my little drummer boy would love it!) and then one evening, we split up. Stephen went to "Sleep No More" at The McKittrick Hotel and I attended The Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. FAB. U. LOUS!!

I got lost trying to get back to the hotel (where are my Rocky Mountains??) but happily found St Patrick's Cathedral and many other famous, fun and festive parts of the city. We had mostly rain and some snow, although the wind and cold temperatures felt like we were smack dab at the North Pole. We enjoyed a beautiful pedicab ride through Central Park. We shopped and ate at cute little cafes, grabbed some NY style pizza and enjoyed it all immensely!

The NBC tours were pretty incredible as well. We saw many famous people and sets and I learned from our NBC point person that my little rockstar is well on his way! They were discussing some of the places in NYC that he has played when the man looked at me with really wide eyes and said "You know those are really major venues!!" Nope! This mama didn't know that. I was too busy being proud of every single thing he does!wink

My reason for taking you on this little trip down memory lane, is that I heard a holiday song by Sugarland that was nearly word for word my own experience! I hope you enjoy it and it makes you think of times and places when you were in the most perfect place at the most perfect time with the most perfect person to share it.

In humbled Rotary service,

Kathleen Saltmarsh-Voss
Colorado Springs Rotary President-Elect

Amazon Smile in 6 steps!
As you're doing your shopping online, did you know that you can support our Rotary Club with every Amazon purchase? Here’s how:
  1. Go to smile.amazon.com (not amazon.com). Amazon Smile is the same company, same account, same password, but the Amazon Smile program gives one half of one percent of every purchase to charity. No, it’s not a lot, but it’s also not nuthin’ (to be exact: about $150 for the Club so far). So again, go to smile.amazon.com
  2. Sign into your Amazon account as you normally would
  3. On the very top left of the page, next to the AmazonSmile logo, are three horizontal bars. Click there for the drop-down menu.
  4. Scroll ALL the way down to “Your AmazonSmile”; it should be the last option right before “Sign Out”; Click on “Your AmazonSmile”
  5. On the right side of the page, click on the “change charity” box under Your current charity (Note: If you are currently supporting another charity, that’s awesome! These instructions are for those who are not doing so. Also, if you have not previously selected a charity, your default option will be St. Judge Children’s Research Hospital.)
  6. Type in Community Service Fund of the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs; click Select
  7. That’s it. You’re all set. Just remember to go to Smile.Amazon.com when you shop from now on.
