Here's a trip down memory lane...I was thinking recently about my bookwormish beginnings. I loved to read very early on. My grandma gave me a very thick book about presidents. It went from Washington through the Nixon years. The book was filled with all sorts of trivia about the presidents and their wives before trivia was a thing! I loved reading about science but I also never missed Marlon Perkins' Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. How's that for branding?!
I loved to read Beverly Cleary (Ramona the Pest), Judy Blume (Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing), Betty MacDonald (Mrs. Piggle Wiggle), and Carolyn Keene (Nancy Drew). I didn't read The Hardy Boys books because my mom thought they were too dark. Insert epic facepalm But you can bet I never missed theTV series!! My mom also wouldn't let me watch Eight Is Enough. Then I was the mom who learned to enjoy Family Guy from my early teen kiddos. NewsFlash! They turned out to be awesome people! But I digress. Back to my own young life.
I read endlessly about animals. Before Mr. Spielberg scared the ever-lovin' stuffin's out of us with sharks, I thought that octopi were our worst ocean enemies. My parents took my sister and me to a drive-in so they could see Poseidon Adventure - the olden days version. They were fairly sure that we would sleep through the movie. So weird - fill a kid up with movie candy and expect them to sleep. So, I watched the movie through my fingers. Sometimes I add ocean cruise to my bucket list but then I remember the movie and remove it.
I wonder if any of our club members read Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's books. I loved the idea of a nice old lady that lived in an upside-down house and had magical potions from her pirate husband that helped the neighbor kids live their best lives. I wonder if that's how I earned my completely unrealistic sense of adventure.
Reading is one of those experiences that open the whole entire world up to you...and beyond. I barely remember sounding out words and I was, yes, hooked on phonics.
Nowadays I still can sound out most words but I read a lot of James Patterson, Janet Evanovich, Sue Grafton. For nonfiction, my preferences are all over the map. Lately, I've been reading Good Morning, Good Life: 5 Simple Habits to Master Your Mornings and Upgrade Your Life by Amy Schmittauer Landino. I've also been reading books written by Rotarians about Rotary leadership.
In fifteen days, Kathleen's Korner will be put to pasture. Still, I think the next 379 days will be awesome!
If you have bulletin announcements, please email the EXACT WORDING of your announcement to KSaltmarshVoss@yahoo.com by Wednesday at 5 pm. I don't write your announcements but I do make them nice 'n' fancy!
As you're doing your shopping online, did you know that you can support our Rotary Club with every Amazon purchase? Here’s how:
Go to smile.amazon.com (not amazon.com). Amazon Smile is the same company, same account, same password, but the Amazon Smile program gives one half of one percent of every purchase to charity. No, it’s not a lot, but it’s also not nuthin’ (to be exact: about $150 for the Club so far). So again, go to smile.amazon.com
Sign into your Amazon account as you normally would
On the very top left of the page, next to the AmazonSmile logo, are three horizontal bars. Click there for the drop-down menu.
Scroll ALL the way down to “Your AmazonSmile”; it should be the last option right before “Sign Out”; Click on “Your AmazonSmile”
On the right side of the page, click on the “change charity” box under Your current charity (Note: If you are currently supporting another charity, that’s awesome! These instructions are for those who are not doing so. Also, if you have not previously selected a charity, your default option will be St. Judge Children’s Research Hospital.)
Type in Community Service Fund of the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs; click Select
That’s it. You’re all set. Just remember to go to Smile.Amazon.com when you shop from now on.
