Join us Friday, September 11th, as we honor those who served our country during one of the hardest times in America. Our program will be held in partnership with the Military Order of the Purple Heart, featuring a panel of post-9/11 veterans who will share how the events of that day shaped their decision to serve in uniform — and to keep serving their communities long after. Club members and guests will also have the opportunity to share how 9/11 impacted their own willingness to serve their country and community. On September 12th, we were all united — willing to serve, give blood, fly the flag, and join the military. 9/11 touched every one of us, and this anniversary is a chance to return to that shared spirit of commitment and service. |

Human Evolution
Homo sapiens is the only human species left on Earth. Humans emerged around 300,000 years ago, migrated around the world and survived when other hominin species died out. This talk will focus on this remarkable story and will present the evidence that has been uncovered by archeologists, anthropologists and geneticists. This story is Threshold 6 of the Big History Project.
Dr. Carol Mosier Bach was born in Hays, KS and grew up in Spalding, NE. She graduated from Kansas State University and the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. Following medical school, she completed her residency and fellowship at the University of Washington in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Dr. Mosier Bach practiced at the University of Washington and Seattle Childrens Hospital for 23 years and was a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics. In 1998, she moved to Colorado Springs and she failed retirement. In 2002, she began her second career in education at School District 11 where she taught 6th grade at Mann Middle School and then became a member of the science faculty at Palmer High School where she taught Biology. She now is successfully retired and is a member of the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs. Her hobbies are genealogy and life long learning. She is a member of the Board of the Pikes Peak Regional Science Fair, is the current president of the Tuesday Luncheon Club, historian of the Woman's Literary Club and is a member of the Pikes Peak Genealogical Society. Carol and her husband, Allan Bach, met in medical school. They have two adult sons.

Building Community Through Creative Projects: An Overview of Concrete Couch

Concrete Couch is a Colorado Springs nonprofit dedicated to building community through creative projects. Our mission is To work with kids and community groups to create public art, to build community, and to create environments and experiences that humanize our world… During this presentation, attendees will learn how Concrete Couch has transformed an abandoned concrete dump and former homeless encampment into the vibrant Concrete Coyote Community Park, where we now host youth programs, festivals, cultural events, workshops, and community gatherings. Furthermore, the program will dive into the Sam Dunlap Wall of Inspiration, a community-built mosaic celebrating unsung community heroes in Colorado Springs. This project was made possible in part through the support of the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs, whose grant helped advance this meaningful community collaboration. Together, we’ll explore how creativity, service, and partnerships can beautify our city, teach valuable skills, foster belonging, and inspire communities to work together toward a shared vision. (Public Art Archive) Presenter Bio Thomas Pantoja is a lifelong Colorado Springs resident, raised in the Mill Street neighborhood and now residing in the Hillside neighborhood. A graduate of UCCS, Thomas has dedicated his career to strengthening the local community. Before joining Concrete Couch as Community Integration Manager, he worked with youth experiencing homelessness at Urban Peak Colorado Springs (now The PLACE). At Concrete Couch, Thomas builds partnerships, connects people with programs and volunteer opportunities, and helps advance the organization’s mission of building community through creative projects. Thomas is also an official member of the Men of Influence group in Colorado Springs whose mission is to bring local gangs together to open the lines of communication between all factions, to help prevent violence in our community, foster open communication, prevent minor issues from escalating into street violence, and to safeguard our children and community from gun violence. Outside of work, he enjoys being a father, hiking, camping, fishing, exploring Colorado’s outdoors, and playing dominoes with his friend Coach T. |

Steve will also highlight El Paso County’s nationally and statewide recognized innovations – including air-gapped election systems, livestreamed ballot-box cameras, and new voter-information tools – designed to strengthen election integrity, security, transparency, and public confidence. Join your fellow Rotarians on Saturday, October 17th, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM for an exclusive 30 minute guided tour by Thomas Pantoja of one of Colorado Springs’ most vibrant public art achievements: the Sam Dunlap Wall of Inspiration. Afterward, we will gather nearby for a social lunch at a new neighborhood spot by Memorial Park, Perriteaux’s Cajun Restaurant. Event Details
Phase 1: The Tour (11:00 AM – 11:45 AM) We’ll start our morning at the Sam Dunlap Wall of Inspiration (Sam Dunlap Wall of Inspiration | Concretecouch). This community-built mosaic honors the legacy of Sam Dunlap—a trailblazing local advocate who dedicated his life to mentoring youth and championing civic leadership in Colorado Springs. Developed over several years by the team at Concrete Couch alongside local school kids and volunteers, this project showcases how hands-on art programs can transform public spaces into vibrant landmarks of community pride. Phase 2: Cajun Lunch & Social (12:00 PM – 12:30+ PM) After the tour we will head over to Memorial Park’s newest restaurant: Perriteaux's Cajun Restaurant. Owned by Louisiana native Perry Sanders Jr. (owner of The Famous Steakhouse), Perriteaux's brings incredible, scratch-made Bayou flavor to the neighborhood.

VolunBeer: Spend an hour volunteering in the Care & Share Food Bank Distribution Center, helping sort, pack, and prepare food for neighbors across Southern Colorado who are struggling with hunger every day — then unwind and enjoy beer from local breweries afterward! This is a fun, social way to make a meaningful impact.
Tasks will vary based on the immediate needs of the distribution center and may include inspecting, sorting, packing food, bulk processing, and more!

Our club is sponsoring this event, and we have 10 spots reserved for Rotary volunteers. If more than 10 are interested, the public volunteer sign-up is an option, but be quick, spots go fast!

Slopes To Hope

Drew Roberts is a Breckenridge Rotarian who founded Slopes to Hope (website linked below). Slopes to Hope partners with hotels in the major ski areas in Colorado to recover clothing items lost or left behind by visitors and distributes items collected to homeless shelters, churches, schools, and nonprofits across Summit County, the Denver Metro Area, and Colorado Springs. His efforts help stop these items from ending up in our landfills and puts them into the hands of individuals and families who need them most and are facing economic and housing hardship.
Rotary has been instrumental in helping Drew identify locations for these items to go. Our club specifically worked with Drew and Slopes to Hope to coordinate the delivery of coats/clothing/pillows to both the Salvation Army Family Hope Center and the Springs Rescue Mission.
