ROTARIANS AT WORK - MASK MAKING
Judith McCaffrey, our mask making team leader, delivered 10 masks to the SB School District (Peabody School) last Thursday, so their cafeteria workers, who are distributing food every day to kids and their families (breakfast and lunch), would have masks to wear! They were so grateful!
On Friday, Judith went to the SB Foodbank and delivered 31 masks for the staff and volunteers at their food distribution sites. Judith put a label on the ziplock bag that each mask goes into, with the Rotary letter and Rotary brochure attached to each bag. Judith is hoping that we'll get back some photos of people wearing their masks!
Judith would like to deliver the next bunch of masks next Tuesday to Sansum Clinic. Would everyone please finish up the 12 masks you have now and deliver them to Judith's house by the end of the day next Monday, April 21. If you'd also like to pick up some additional fabric and elastic at that time, let Judith know. She'll have it ready for you on Monday!
Special shout out to Gary and Cheryl who picked up their 3rd bunch of 12 on Friday....so 24 finished! Great job!

Thanks go to Chris Baxter for composing a letter of gratitude to go out to healthcare and other front line workers during the coronavirus response, and to Luz Maria Ortiz Smith, with help from Diana Washburn and Lily Carey, for compiling a list of organizations and businesses to receive the letters. Chris will mail merge the letters with the list. If you are interested in putting your own personal note at the bottom of the letter, let Chris know.
SUNRISE ROTARY CLUB COVID-19 RESPONSE
The Club and Foundation Boards recently approved giving the disaster relief funds from the Club's Foundation, with a match from club members, to the Foodbank and for Nicaragua disaster relief. Thanks to our generous members, at the time of this writing, we have received a total of $6,450 which, with the Club Foundation's match, will enable the Club to donate a minimum of $5,566 to the Foodbank and $2,383 to the Rotary Club of Ciudad Sandino, although we believe more checks may be in the mail.
A portion of the Nicaragua donation will be submitted as a District Grant. The Rotary Foundation and District are allowing reimbursement for purchases made after March 15th, so our partners in Nicaragua have been able, in the past couple of days, to purchase supplies in preparation for a COVID-19 surge in their country.

TIME FOR SOME LEVITY
Coronavirus jokes are abound. Here are a few, to give you a laugh:
I was so bored, I called Jake from State Farm just to talk to someone. He asked me what I was wearing.

The world has turned upside down. Old folks are sneaking out of the house, and their kids are yelling at them to stay indoors!
You think it's bad now? In 20 years our country will be run by people homeschooled by day drinkers...
This virus has done what no woman had been able to do....cancel all sports, shut down all bars, and keep men at home!
Do not call the police on suspicious people in your neighborhood! Those are your neighbors without makeup and hair extensions.
Since we can't eat out, now's the perfect time to eat better, get fit and stay healthy. We're quarantined! Who are we trying to impress? We have snacks, we have sweatpants - I say we use them!
Day 14 at home and the dog is looking at me like, "See? This is why I chew the furniture!"
Does anyone know if we can take showers yet or should we just keep washing our hands?
I never thought the comment, "I wouldn't touch him/her with a 6 foot pole" would become a national policy, but here we are!
Me: Alexa, what's the weather this weekend? Alexa: It doesn't matter -- you're not going anywhere.
When this is over, which meeting do I attend first? Weight Watchers or AA?
Quarantine has turned us into dogs. We roam the house all day looking for food. We are told "no" if we get too close to strangers, and we get really excited about car rides.
MEETING NOTES 4/15/20
Guests: Betty Huff, former Sunrise member and now member of the Gulf Coast Sunset Rotary, Alzbeta Zezulkova, last year’s Exchange Student from the Czech Republic, Scott Schoenfeld, Joanne’s son, and speakers Becky Trujillo and Sara Dearman, Chevron.
President Sandra called the meeting to order at 7:30 a.m. The invocation was given by Connard Hogan and the Flag Salute by Gabriel Lucatero.
Sandra covered the calendar, indicating there are only four more formal club meetings this year. She reminded us of the flamingo and that life is all about balance: sleep well, eat regularly, exercise, go walking, stay connected. She also suggested reaching out to club members who have been missing from meetings recently.
Community Service: Luz Maria thanked Judith McCaffrey and her team for making face masks. Chris Baxter is composing a letter to go to first responders and Luz Maria, with help from Diana Washburn and Lily Carey, has compiled an initial list. He will send the letter and list out for comments. He plans to do a mail merge. Let Chris know if you want to send a personal note.
Judith said she went to Bakersfield to buy more material, put packages together and delivered to those sewing. Today, she is going to the School District where they are serving food; the cafeteria workers need masks. Also to the Foodbank staff. Eric said he has class 2 surgical masks and will drop them off at Judith’s house today for delivery.
International Service: Hannah said there is a Zoom meeting next Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. The Rotary Club of Ciudad Sandino is putting the music project on hold and we will submit a District Grant for PPE, handwashing, etc. for them.
Membership: The committee will be Zoom meeting today at noon. They are looking at new member introductions and external PR to promote Rotary in the community.
Donations: Janet Napier reported that the Club’s Foundation has $1,500 set aside for Disaster Relief. The Club and Foundation boards approved requesting club members to match $1,000 to go to the Foodbank and $500 to go to Nicaragua coronavirus response. We thanked Judith for adding an additional $1,000 to be matched for the Foodbank. Right now club member donations have matched both the Foundation’s and Judith’s $1,000 as well as the $500 for Nicaragua. There’s still time to give. Send your contributions to Jody by next Monday, April 20th.
Program: Sandra introduced the speakers from Chevron: Becky Trujillo and Sara Dearman. They work in an office on Upper State Street, opened in early 2019 specifically to address the decommissioning of the oil rigs in the Channel. Chevron actually sold the platforms in the late 90’s but retained the decommissioning liability. The 2015 Plains All American oil spill and Veneco’s bankruptcy hastened the decommissioning when Chevron inherited the platforms back. This is not a new procedure for Chevron; they have decommissioned in Mexico, Thailand and Australia and they are working on best practices. Here they have to deal with fog, wind and rough seas as well as avoiding work when whales are crossing the Channel.

Another issue they have to contend with is the availability of workers and equipment because this work has never happened here before, as it has in the Gulf Coast.
Sara showed us a diagram of a platform, showing the Topside where there are living quarters for 50-60 people: beds, a galley, exercise room, the Deck, and the Jacket which is under water. The first step is to plug the wells so there are no leaks or spills. They started doing this prior to the COVID-19 stoppage. Then they will remove the Topside, then the Jacket down to 85 feet below the mud line. They then have to process the material and it is hard to find a facility that can handle the magnitude of it. They are now searching worldwide to see where they can transport the materials for processing.
Regarding a reef program, Becky said Federal regulations allow the conversion to artificial reefs. A 2010 California program was released but it was vague how it would work. Operators carry the liability forever. Becky said it would be difficult if, in years to come, the State changed the rules and made Chevron liable to bring things up to the new codes. Currently, State policy does not allow for alternative use, such as for wind energy, hotels, etc. We, as California residents, can work with our elected officials to make this decommissioning process more transparent, to relieve the liability issues and allow for alternative uses. They said the head of the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach is a good resource on these issues.
The time frame to conduct the work is probably five years.
