NEW COMMUNITY PHARMACY SERVES 1,500 PEOPLE IN NICARAGUA

The Rotary Clubs of Ciudad Sandino (Nicaragua) and Santa Barbara Sunrise have supported a new community pharmacy in Nicaragua. The project included training for 9 volunteer rural community health promoters and equipping first aid kits in the community of Cuajachillo 2. The health workers went through in-depth training in health care, diagnosis, medicines, petty cash, and administration of the community pharmacies. These workers volunteered 1,008 hours of their time to this training.

Two rural homes in communities with no access to medicines now have pharmacies where community members come to buy medicines at 50% lower than at commercial pharmacies. The cost of medicine is structured to cover the next purchase and more variety of medication. Each pharmacy is run by three health promoters working in coordination. The health workers will receive ongoing education annually. These pharmacies serve 1,500 people.

This project is funded by the Rotary Club of Ciudad Sandino, Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise Charitable Foundation, and a grant from Rotary District 5240.

CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP PROPOSAL

The Membership Committee has drafted a proposal for a Corporate Membership program. The program will enhance the ability of our club to attract new members, offer flexibility with attendance, and increase foundation giving.

Please review the proposal and send feedback to LuzMaria Ortiz, Membership Director.

Find a draft of the proposal here.
TWO NEW WAYS TO PROMOTE MEMBERSHIP

The Public Relations Committee has begun two new ways to help members promote Rotary: weekly email announcements and Facebook events for our club meetings and events. The emails and events provide information about our weekly speaker and general meeting information. Social events like our upcoming Yappy Hour will help promote events outside the club meeting format. These two resources give members the opportunity to share via email or through Facebook with friends who may be interested in attending.

Please take a moment to share the email or share or invite friends through the Facebook event. Thank you!

Just think what our foundation could earn if more Rotarians registered!

DID YOU KNOW?

It was Arch Klumph, father of The Rotary Foundation, who said, "We should look at the Foundation as being not something of today or tomorrow, but think of it in terms of the years and generations to come." That's why the Foundation's Permanent Fund [now called the Endowment Fund] is considered the most important way to assure the future of Rotary's educational and humanitarian programs. Contributions to this fund, formerly called the Endowment for World Understanding and Peace, are invested for the future.

Only earnings from their investment are used to support Foundation programs. Ultimately, it is intended that the Permanent Fund will provide a steady and secure supplement to Foundation support, always guaranteeing a minimum level of program activity and allowing for the possibility of new and expanded programs in the future.
The Foundation gives special recognition to anyone who includes a substantial gift to the Permanent Fund in his or her estate plan or gives outright a minimum cash gift of US$1,000 to the fund. Such a donor is designated as a Rotary Foundation Benefactor. In 1998 there were more than 36,000 Benefactors worldwide.

This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 41

Keeping with the Japanese pin theme, I'll share one last pin, a Japanese paddle depicting a scene with a wisteria maiden, a classical dance from kabuki theater.

I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
