SEE FIRST HAND THE GOOD WORK WE ARE DOING IN NICARAGUA

Would you like to see firsthand the good work we are doing in Nicaragua? Tom Heath and the International Service Committee are organizing a trip to the two rural communities of Cuajachillo 2 and Trinidad Central on October 6-11, 2016. The goals of the trip will include moving forward the upcoming large water distribution project, finalizing our water filters project, verifying last year's pharmacy project, and hopefully viewing this year's project providing tables and benches and an outdoor covered area at a school. The trip will include a mix of a work day, some meetings with the Rotary Club of Ciudad Sandino and the communities, a social fiesta celebrating of our recent work projects, a well as some sightseeing options. Transportation, accommodations, and some meals will be each person's responsibility.

Please contact Tom with any questions and to sign up for the trip.

DID YOU KNOW?

As an international organization, Rotary offers each member unique opportunities and responsibilities. Although each Rotarian has first responsibility to uphold the obligations of citizenship of his or her own country, membership in Rotary enables Rotarians to take a broader view of international affairs. In the early 1950s, a Rotary philosophy was adopted to describe how a Rotarian may think on a global basis. Here is what it said:

"A world-minded Rotarian:
  • looks beyond national patriotism and considers himself as sharing responsibility for the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace;
  • resists any tendency to act in terms of national or racial superiority;
  • seeks and develops common grounds for agreement with peoples of other lands;
  • defends the rule of law and order to preserve the liberty of the individual so that he may enjoy freedom of thought, speech and assembly, and freedom from persecution, aggression, want and fear;
  • supports action directed toward improving standards of living for all peoples, realizing that poverty anywhere endangers prosperity everywhere;
  • upholds the principles of justice for mankind;
  • strives always to promote peace between nations and prepares to make personal sacrifices for that ideal;
  • urges and practices a spirit of understanding of every other man's beliefs as a step toward international goodwill, recognizing that then are certain basic moral and spiritual standards which will ensure a richer, fuller life."
*When this philosophy was developed, Rotary was still an all-male organization. The description of a world-minded Rotarian today would obviously include all female members as well.

This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.
ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 8

This week's pin is a Rotary angel given to me by Sister Christine Bowman who was in town last week and President Chris and I had the opportunity to see. She is now living in Los Angeles, working at the Cathedral of Los Angeles, and is a member of Rotary LA5. A Sunrise member since 1997, Past President (2009-10), National Immunization Day (NID) participant, newsletter editor, Membership Chair, and frequent contributor to our step downs, Sis Chris is always ready with a quick joke and a comforting prayer. Sis Chris is truly a Rotary angel.

I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
