KATHY SCROGGS EARNS HER BLUE BADGE!

Kathy Scroggs was inducted as a member on December 1, 2015. As a new member, Kathy received a red badge and was required to complete a new member assignment sheet to earn her permanent blue badge. Tasks included are specifically designed to expose new members to many aspects of Rotary and to familiarize them with as many club members as possible. A new member to our club but not new to Rotary, Kathy has quickly gotten involved serving as a RYLA counselor, playing a role in President Bill's step down, hosting our recent Ladies Night Out, and coordinating our weekly duties. Thank you, Kathy!

HAPPY HOUR AT LURE!

Sunrisers were lured by the great reviews, happy hour prices, and the chance to socialize with fellow members and spouses last Thursday at Lure! An unintentional outcome: dueling Hawaiian shirts between Scott and Carin (above) and Bob, Ginny, and Daryl! Thanks to all who came out and to Diana Washburn for coordinating the gathering. Stay tuned for the next happy hour date and location.

Check out happy hour photos here.

ERSKINE FIRE FUND UPDATE

To date we have collected $590 from 23 of our ~50 members to support our neighbors in the Kern River area that were ravaged by fires. We are just a few dollars shy of our goal of $600. The Sunrise Foundation will match 1/1 up to $600 and we hope we can send at least $1,200 for this purpose.

If anyone would still like to contribute that did not get a chance to earlier, please pass to Jody Holehouse, either cash or your check to: Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise Charitable Foundation. Our last collection date will be at the meeting on 8/31/2016. If you mail to Jody at Nasif, Hicks, Harris & Co., LLP 104 W Anapamu St Ste B 93101, email her to let her know your check is coming.

BOCCE FACT OF THE WEEK

Bocce is a ball sport belonging to the boules family, closely related to British bowls and French petanque, with a common ancestry from ancient games played in the Roman Empire.

Save the date of Thursday, September 22 at Arnoldi's Cafe for our evening of bocce! for those that do not know how to play, we'll also have a bocce tutorial by Joe Weiland at an upcoming meeting.

The bocce fact and event is coordinated by Diana Washburn, Social Events Coordinator.

HAVE A PINT WITH PAST PRESIDENTS!

Past Presidents Dennis Johns and David Velarde invite you to join them and other past Presidents for a pint of local brew in the Funk Zone.

Tuesday Aug 30, 2016
5:30pm
Figueroa Mountain Brewing
Santa Barbara Taproom
137 Anacapa St. (corner of Yanonali and Helena)

Our past presidents have a wealth of knowledge about our club, district and Rotary in general. Come tap into that knowledge base by asking about anything Rotary. If they don't know, they can get the answer for you. If you don't have any Rotary questions just come out, have a pint and talk about anything. Or start a game of Giant Jenga.
DREAM VACATION RAFFLE WILL LAUNCH SOON!

DID YOU KNOW?

The headquarters of Rotary International always has been in the area of Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. First it was in Chicago itself, but in 1954 an attractive new building opened in suburban Evanston, Illinois. The Ridge Avenue building met the needs of the Rotary Secretariat until the 1980s when the addition of new programs, the growth of The Rotary Foundation, and the new Polio Plus activities made the headquarters building extremely crowded and required some staff members to be housed in supplementary office space nearby.

When a modern 18-story office building became available in downtown Evanston in 1987, it appeared to meet all of Rotary's space and expansion needs for years to come. The glass and steel structure, built in 1977, provides 400,000 square feet (37,160 square meters) of office and usable space. The building was purchased by Rotary International, which leases approximately two-thirds of the space to commercial tenants, until needed by future Rotary growth.

The building provides a 190-seat auditorium, large parking garage and 300-seat cafeteria, as well as functional office space for the 400 employees of the World Headquarters. The executive suite on the 18th floor includes conference rooms for the RI board and committee meetings, in addition to the offices for the RI president, president-elect, chairman of The Rotary Foundation Trustees, and general secretary. One Rotary Centre, as it is called, enhances the efficient operations of Rotary International.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 9

This week’s pin is the new Rotary logo. Rotary recently revitalized its identity with the help of Siegel+Gale. They didn’t set out to reinvent the wheel (pun intended) but to strengthen Rotary’s identity. I’ve noticed when I wear this pin I get more people asking me about Rotary than when I wear any of my other pins. While the other pins seem to illicit questions in general (like, “What is that pin you’re wearing?”) this pin links Rotary with the wheel, when sometimes people don’t know what the wheel means.

I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
