The Rotary Club of Ciudad Sandino in partnership with the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise have successfully implemented the Community Pharmacy Project in the communities of Trinidad Central and Cuajachillo #2 in Nicaragua. The organization Acción Medica Cristiana (AMC) trained health promoters and then provided communities with mini pharmacies at an initial cost. The medicine is sold at a low cost in the community and the resulting funds cover the cost to re-stock the pharmacy and over time to expand the type of medicine available from the pharmacy.
The benefits are many, to name a few: cost of medicines are close to 50% less than at a pharmacy, people do not have to leave the community for medications, promoters receive training that will allow them to diagnosis, treat and refer patients at a much deeper level.
This project is funded by the Rotary Clubs of Ciudad Sandino and Santa Barbara Sunrise and a grant from Rotary District 5240. Tom Heath, International Service Director, is the project manager.

DID YOU KNOW?
In the early days of Rotary, any change in the RI Bylaws or Constitution was proposed and voted upon at the annual convention. As attendance at conventions increased and open discussion became more difficult, a Council on Legislation was created in 1934 as an advisory group to debate and analyze proposals before they were voted upon by the convention.
Finally at the 1970 Atlanta Convention, it was decided that the Council on Legislation would actually become the legislative or parliamentary body of Rotary. The council is composed of one delegate from each Rotary district as well as several ex-officio members. It was agreed that the council would meet every three years at a time other than at the Rotary convention.
The Council on Legislation provides the membership of Rotary a democratic process for legislative change in the operations of Rotary International.
This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 33
I am so grateful Judith sponsored me in Rotary 17 years ago. Rotary has given me the most authentic experiences and the joy of making a difference in the lives of those who need us. Now, I'm very excited to be sharing this with Kathleen! Give the gift of Rotary to someone and you'll be giving a gift to the world. And, you'll get this nifty sponsor pin!
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
